Just saw this come across the news. Pretty bummed, although 83 is a pretty good age. Insert a meaningful Star Trek quote here. I'll miss him.
Leonard Nimoy
American actor, musician, film director, poet and photographer.
RIP Leonard Nimoy
@nightriff: Apparently he was in the hospital earlier this week with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, most likely from smoking.
@nightriff: COPD he smoked for 30 years.
Wow, this has really bummed me out. His last tweet is really poignant;
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

Probably the single most important figure in the fiction, played by an actor who truly understood the character and made it work for nearly fifty years
Can't lie, it hits me a bit hard :'(
You know, Spock always meant so much to me, and my dad (who watched the original series when it aired back in the 60s) that he and I have always used the Live Long and Prosper hand sign when we say goodbye to each other. Most celebrity deaths don't really affect me at all, but man, this one has.
Rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy. :'(
Really just a superb guy all around. Spock was a great character, but Nimoy was who brought him alive and kept him relevant. Nimoy was the finest custodian of the concept of Spock in the movies, on shows, and in real life in interviews, at conventions, and in his private life.
I also choose to remember Nimoy for his voice work over the years, either playing himself or Spock or both. As a kid I was inspired by his show "In Search of..." (1976–1982). It was a quasi-documentary television show which portrayed unusual natural phenomena and 'investigated' the paranormal from a scientific perspective...it was sort of a mild debunking show putting forward science to explain things as at least an option...as well as an investigation show. As a kids I was fascinated by big foot, aliens, odd bits of description in ancient texts; but that show was always nice about having a few sides to explanation.
He was also a proud Bostonian! There is a recent documentary about Boston and he is interviewed in it walking the old neighborhood. That was just a great piece about Boston.
This world will miss you Lenny, but enjoy the Final Frontier!
COPD is no joke. My grandfather has that now (for the same reason - smoked for 40 years) and it is slowly killing him. He's on oxygen 24/7 now.
So many memorable performances. Star Trek, The Simpsons, Atlantis, Civ IV, Kingdom Hearts, Fringe, hell, even Transformers. There's also the lesser known but fantastic radio play-style productions of classic sci-fi novels he did with John de Lancie called Alien Voices. I strongly encourage you to check those out.
RIP, Leonard Nimoy. You will be sorely missed.
