Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Bonus levels, rounds, or stages give players a chance to gain extra points, powerups, or lives. Occasionally bonus stages will play completely different than the rest of the game, like as a slot machine or pinball minigame.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Sometimes games come bundled peripherals needed to enhance the games experience.
The continue is a classic gaming concept, and usually arises when the player "dies" or fails in the game. Usually some loss is tied to a continue, in a form of a "life" or something of other value.
A destructible environment means the player has the ability to destroy his/her surroundings. This allows players to use the environment to their advantage.
Digitized sprites, popularized in the early 90s, were a form of graphics that used footage of real actors, Stop-motion frames of a figure/clay model or 3D renders of characters that were then made digital and put into the game.
The 1996 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles California on May 16-18.
First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines, and later, arcade machines. When players lose at a game, it is game over.
In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
Hostages exist to be saved, guarded, and occasionally executed.
Whether they're getting in the way while you're walking or driving, you always feel the need to trample them.
Persistent bullet holes allows players to shoot holes into walls without them disappearing right away. This feature added realism to first person shooters, as well as the ability to draw smiley faces.
A shooter in which the player movement is restricted so they can only follow a linear, predetermined path. This style of game is considered very "arcadey" and is usually accompanied by a lightgun.
Reloading is the action of replacing the ammunition magazine inside a gun. It adds a touch of realism to most modern shooters, and a certain amount of tension when a player is forced to reload while under fire.
The first subscription based video game serviced offered through your cable company.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
