Lexica is a word puzzle that involves sliding letter tiles around a grid to form words.
It first appeared in a non-interactive form in the UK newspaper The Times in March 2010, created by Vexus Puzzles, with the interactive puzzles still favoring British English spelling.
The aim of a Lexica puzzle is to move all the provided tiles into specific positions to form words. Tiles are not blocked by other tiles, but can only move in one direction (i.e. along one row or one column). Grids in the paper and interactive versions are typically 6x6. Levels finish automatically when all lines form correct words - while several words can usually fit in any particular line, puzzles have only one overall solution.
The game includes 288 puzzles divided across three difficulty levels, in turn divided into 8 packs of 12 puzzles. The Steam version includes all levels; the iPhone/iPad version provides 36 puzzles for free, with the rest for sale within. Harder difficulties include more tiles, more complex layouts, and obscure or unusually-spelled words.
Levels are timed, though this is only for the player and, with the exception of a ranking for in-game statistics, has no effect on gameplay.
The word lexica is the plural of lexicon, a Latin word meaning 'dictionary' or 'vocabulary'.
