Auto-aiming (or Auto-targeting) allows for a character to attack or interact with an object or enemy that's very near to the player or within their field of vision.
Videogame bosses, generally enormous ones, that take up the entire background of the screen you fight them on, usually only extending the body parts they attack with (and for some reason, their weak point) into the foreground where the player can interact with them.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Boss battles that require defeating or eliminating the hands of the boss. They are the focus point of the battle and typically the source of the attacks against the player. The hands are generally the size of the protagonist, if not larger, and often seen floating around without arms.
An attack that does more damage than usual, usually affected by random chance and some sort of modifier.
Decapitation is the removal of the head of a person or animal.
The ability to freely slice or chop, based on a physics engine instead of predetermined spots. Slicing where you cut instead of where the game "lets" you cut.
When the player, compared to the adversary he/she is supposed to defeat, looks like a tiny inchworm.
Most modern shooting games add the realistic touch of rendering shots to the cranium instantly fatal. Glorious for the shooter, kind of a bummer to the shootee.
A common method of hit detection in shooters that disregards bullet physics. Basically, if the crosshair is on the target, the shot connects right away and without fail.
Combat that takes place in real time, but that can be paused to give commands to certain characters.
A concept introduced in Vagrant Story. A long attack combo results in higher Risk which lowers your chances of landing a successful attack.
Strategic dismemberment allows players to separate an enemy's limbs from its body without killing it, disabling limb-specific functions.
Time Stopping is the ability to stop the flow of time, stopping all movement from everyone but the person who used the ability.
The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) is a modernization of the turn-based combat mechanic seen in previous Fallout games. V.A.T.S. gives the player a strategic advantage, pausing real-time combat in order to target specific body parts.
This is a place of special vulnerability. Particularly used in boss fights or when simply fighting Giant Enemy Crabs that cannot be defeated by usual means.
