Story
The game begins in 1938. Detective Norman arrives at a bar on Central Island to interrogate Thomas Angelo, a former capo in the Salieri crime family who has been marked for death. Tommy agrees to disclose his history with Don Salieri, as well as some information, in return for the protection of him and his family.
Prior to having any involvement with organized crime, Tommy was a taxi cab driver during the early years of the Great Depression. Although the hours were long and the pay was low, Tommy was grateful to be employed during a time of financial crisis where many people were suffering. One night in 1930, while Tommy was on his shift, he witnesses a car shootout between gangsters of two rival families: Salieri and Morello. Two of Salieri's trusted men called Paulie & Sam hold Tommy at gunpoint and order him to evade the pursuing cars. After Tommy successfully escapes from the prevalent gang war, Sam tells Tommy to head to Little Italy. Paulie and Sam head into Salieri's bar, and Sam returns to give Tommy money to compensate for the damage done to his car. Soon afterwards, Tommy realizes that he's been paid much more than he expected and begins to take an interest to the criminal lifestyle.
The following day, Tommy takes on various taxi fares across the city. Whilst on break, Tommy is attacked by two of Morello's men who tracked him down. Tommy breaks free from their grasp and a chase ensues. Making his way towards Salieri's bar, Tommy regroups with Paulie and Sam, who threaten Morello's thugs to leave. Shortly afterwards, Sam decides to introduce Tommy to Don Salieri.
During a sit down, Salieri offers to give Tommy a loan which will cover the damages done to his taxi cab. While Tommy is thankful for this offer, he makes it clear that he wants to get revenge on the men who attacked him. With Paulie's help, Salieri allows Tommy to smash up some of the cars parked in the garage of Morello's bar. Afterwards, Paulie introduces Tommy to Ralph - the mechanic and locksmith of the Salieri family with a noticeable stutter, and Vincenzo - Salieri's gunsmith who like to show-off.
