A mammoth is a species of the large, extinct elephant like mammal equipped with long, curved tusks and a covering of long hair. They lived from the 5 million years ago to a recent as 4,500 years ago. They were members of the family Elephantidae which contains, along with mammoths, the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors. Mammoths are often expected to be larger than elephants, although they varied by species, and some dwarf species were even as small as a horse.
Mammoths in games
The finding of Mammoths is a central aim of the Syberia adventure games, and although Mammoths are only seen at the very end, they are often discussed during the game and feature on the cover art.
Mammoths most commonly appear in games as background animals or enemies, in Skyrim for example the Mammoths are animals that are found near giants, who herd them for milk. Mammoth like creatures are similarly seen as enemies in the Monster Hunter series. Examples of games with a mammoth as a central character are very rare, one example being Mammoth Gravity Battles - a turn based strategy game with mammoths piloting flying saucers.
