Introduced to the Mario series with Doki Doki Panic, Birdo is an effeminate dinosaur with a penchant for cute things. Although initially a boss enemy, nowadays she mostly appears as a friendly side character.
Bowser is one of the most iconic villains in gaming. His role as the main antagonist in the Mario franchise has cemented this King of Koopas' status in video game history.
Bowser Jr. is the son of Bowser and the main antagonist of Super Mario Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros. He loves to play sports with his dad in various Mario sport titles like tennis, golf, basketball and kart racing!
Diddy Kong made his first appearance in 1994 as Donkey Kong's side-kick in Donkey Kong Country for the SNES. Since then, he has starred in numerous Donkey Kong games, his own Diddy Kong Racing games and Mario sports titles. He wears a red Nintendo hat.
The Original Donkey Kong made his debut in the game of the same name, where he tossed barrels at his nemesis Mario. His grandson, Donkey Kong Jr., went on to create a legacy of his own in games such as Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
Donkey Kong Jr. is, or at least has been considered, the son of the original Donkey Kong, who made his debut in the 1983 arcade classic which bore his name. He is actually a younger version of the current Donkey Kong.
An overgrown, giant-tentacled Blooper. He is a major boss in Super Mario Sunshine and makes cameos in multiple Mario games.
Lakitu has appeared in a variety of Mario games; from Super Mario Bros on the NES right up to Mario Kart 7. He is responsible for dropping Spinies onto the levels below, holding up signs and his very own start signal from all nine Mario Kart games.
Luigi is Mario's brother. He began as a simple palette swap of Mario, but was later differentiated. In his later forays, he provides comic relief.
Originally a carpenter named Jumpman, this Italian plumber has gone on to become the most recognizable video game character of them all, starring in a veritable pantheon of titles like kart racing and sports. He has been voiced by Charles Martinet for nearly 20 years.
Not actually a separate character, Metal Mario is Mario after getting a power-up that makes him stronger, heavier, slower, and more damage-resistant. This version of Mario appeared as a boss character in the first two Smash Bros. games.
A cowardly mole who often throws stuff at Mario. He is also known to occasionally participate in sports.
Petey Piranha is a mutated, bipedal piranha plant who shoots sludge from his mouth. He has been known to enjoy sports.
Luigi's love interest and Peach's sidekick. She's the princess of Sarasaland.
Princess Peach Toadstool is usually the damsel in distress from the Mario franchise. She gets kidnapped frequently by Bowser, though she's not averse to being captured by various other villains from time to time.

The Toad is a member of the Toad species. He is a loyal attendant of Princess Peach and often assists Mario on his journeys in a variety of ways.
Toadsworth is Princess Peach's personal steward who first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. Since then, he has appeared in a number of Mario franchise spin-offs.
Luigi's dark counterpart, who is mainly known for appearing in Mario spinoffs. He is voiced by Charles Martinet. Enjoys playing a game of tennis with Wario.
Wario is Mario's rival and doppelganger; a crude garlic-loving brute with an obsession with treasure. Wario's name is a portmanteau of the word "warui" ('bad' in Japanese) "Mario".
Yoshi is a recurring character in the Mario franchise and has since gone on to star in his own games.
