Mario

2D Characters in a 3D Scenario

Games where the characters are 2D bitmap images (sprites), but the environment and scenarios are made in a 3-Dimensional space. This technique was commonly used on consoles like the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS. Many 90's First-Person Shooters and early 3D RPGs also used this technique. Some used it as a stylistic choice like Paper Mario and Rakugaki Showtime.

3D Characters in a 2D Scenario

A rare case were the games that uses 2.5D gameplay only uses the 3D models for the characters, while the plataforms and the background are made with sprites.

3D Platformer

3D Platformers are games where movement, traversal and mainly jumping is the core of the gameplay. They are a tridimensional equivalent of 2D platformer one of the most popular video game genres in the third and fourth generation of video game consoles.

Action Command

Whether a timed button press or a more complex action, these are inputs performed during attack animations to increase damage. Most often seen in the Mario RPG series.

All Cup Tour

The All-Cup Tour is a special tour that allows you to play all 16 courses at once in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! You start out at Luigi Circuit and work your way around the tour to the last course, Rainbow Road.

amiibo

Amiibo is Nintendo's NFC figurine and card program that works across multiple games. Amiibo work natively with the Nintendo Wii U via the NFC reader in the Wii U GamePad and the New Nintendo 3DS. In 2015, Nintendo will release an accessory for the original Nintendo 3DS that lets players use Amiibo on it as well.

Anaerobic Character

Although rare there are characters in games that can apparently survive without oxygen.

Blunt Weapons

Bats, hammers, wrenches, maces, staves, or even brass knuckles. These are weapons intended for blunt trauma rather than cutting or slicing.

Cameo

When a character from an existing media franchise makes a brief appearance in a video game, sometimes without even openly acknowledging their origins.

Can't Kill Innocents

Games in which the player is incapable - not just discouraged from - harming innocents. Sorry, no matter how bad you want to, you just can't pull that trigger.

Casanova

Male version of Femme Fatale. An attractive male who has regular, frequent dalliances with women or more sinister, uses his charm to seduce woman to use them for his own needs.

Detective

Someone who investigates unsolved crimes and other mysterious happenings, either for a living, as a hobby, or simply by chance.

Dorrie

A plesiosaur-like creature in the Super Mario series.

Drowning

Drowning in games occurs when a being (not suited to be in water) runs out of oxygen, time, power, or barely even touches the water surface. Further complicated by the local sea-life that can knock the air out of you, should you get close.

Dude in Distress

The spear counterpart of Damsel in Distress, this is when a male or male-presenting character is captured/kidnapped and must be saved by another character.

Falling Damage

Receiving damage or dying as a result of falling.

Foot Racing

Games that involve characters racing on foot. This could be a portion of the game or could be the game's main focus.

Guest Character

Games featuring guests introduce playable, established characters from outside of a franchise. Primarily but not exclusively seen in fighting games.

Headbutt

A sharp blow delivered by driving the head into the opponent.

Hero Unit

Special or stronger units than standard ones, usually found in strategy games. This is not necessarily the same thing as a superhero or a game's protagonist.

Heroic Sacrifice

When a character or group of characters does something extremely brave on behalf of another character or group of characters, knowing that they will get killed or seriously injured in the process.

Italian Accent

Characters who speak with an Italian flavoured accent, usually second generation immigrants.

Nitpicker

Nitpickers are the avian adversaries of Donkey Kong Jr.

P-Meter

The P-Meter is an on-screen meter that fills up as Mario gains speed. When it is full Mario can fly.

Platform Exclusive

Third-party developers and publishers occasionally engage in the practice of releasing a title or piece of DLC on only one platform for any number of reasons. Sometimes these are permanent while others are only platform exclusive for a certain window of time.

Platform Exclusive Content

Content such as modes, characters, maps, ect. that are exclusive to a single platform in a multiplatform game.

Plumber

A plumber is a maintenance professional who specializes in piping for water, drainage, and sewage systems.

Referees

These men and women are present to officiate sporting events and racing games. Notable referees in the article are: Lakitu, John Madden, Punch-Out! Referee and DJ Jazzman.

Rule of Three

The Rule of Three dictates that a certain action must be repeated three times, usually when fighting a boss battle, in order to complete an objective.
