Great action, exciting traversal. Let down when you’re not Spiderman.

When I think Spiderman I think swinging through New York at lightning pace, and this game nails that. The web swinging is fast, easy to control and feels brilliant. Just what you would want.

In combat Spiderman feels responsive, agile and you have a ton of combat options through gadgets, suit upgrades and abilities. Allowing you to adjust to your playstyle, do you want to be sneaky or do you want to throw yourself in and use your fists? It feels great and you will be doing a lot of it.

The story is also good and tackles some hard-hitting subjects, as in the Spiderman comics. They don’t back away from these issues in the game which gives a feel of maturity to the story telling. This is great to see and something I wish more games did. The voice acting and pacing is wonderful, it’s a very well told story.

It fails for me on a couple of issues, the boss fights are a little lacking in the game play options. They look fantastic but due to this cinematic feel you are limited in what you can do. As such they can be reduced to waiting for counter attack timings or finding objects in the environment to throw at the boss then jumping in for a quick combat before bounding away to wait again.

There are also sequences where you’re not Spiderman, but MJ or another character. These stealth sequences lack the fun of being Spiderman and are very on rails. You are not given the full rules for sneaking and you can miss the path they want you to go, which can lead to frustrating fails and restarts. These sections can just be a bit flat and I found myself rushing to get through them.

These points take little away from the overall game as they are a small percentage of it. There are tons of things to do if you want to get 100% completion, as in all open world games. A special mention to the frustrating Drone side quests, which only highlight that the traversal isn’t quite accurate enough on a small scale.

It’s a great game and any fan of Spiderman, open world or action games should definitely check it out.

A great modern Spider-Man game that's been long overdue. 0

Marvel's Spider-Man might borrow heavily from a selection of other great games, some of which feature a certain Dark Knight, but it also manages to make you care about the world of the web-slinging hero of New York in a way no past Spider-Man game ever as. It all results in an experience that is exciting, action packed and full of memorable moments. Simply put, Marvel's Spider-Man is the best spidey experience you'll likely to get.Spider-Man's combat is challenging yet oh so satisfying.Insomniac...
