Guide: How to survive the suicide mission & save everyone?

I did his loyalty mission, and I didn't pick him for any of the jobs. I used #6 team in the list, in fact.
DAMMIT. He was one of the characters I wanted to survive >.<

No, I didn't. I had Garrus and Thane with me.
Got everyone out alive in my playthrough, didn't see the make up on the list though it's pretty similar to some of them.
Vents : Legion
Group 1 : Garrus
Shield : Samara
Group 2 : Garrus
Escort : Jacob
My End Team: Thane/Garrus (Gotta love using throw/percussion bullet (or w/e it was) to knock those collectors off their fancy platforms).
Great mission, was sweating bullets.
I also had Mordin die for unexplained reasons. Used Legion in vents, Garrus as team leader both times, Grunt as escort, and Jack as shield. I've tried several combinations that had two or three crew members die, but this one gets you to the end without any deaths until the last scene when Jokers says the ground team made it back and you see Mordin on the ground... So this time I'm doing it all the same, but sending Mordin back as escort. He survived when I had sent him in an earlier run through. Maybe this one will get the Achievement!
Update: It worked this time. Legion in vent, Garrus as team leader both times, Jack as Shield, Mordin as escort. Woh Hoo!!!
Miranda just got pissed off at me, I completed her loyalty quest and then her and Jack started fighting. I liked Jack as a character more than Miranda so I sided with Jack, but my paragon level isn't high enough to make amends with Miranda.
How long do I have to patch things up? If I don't patch things up, is Shepard doomed?
Also, is there any way to make it through the suicide mission alive, and leave some team -mates behind? I wouldn't mind losing Jacob and Miranda for Mass Effect 3- get rid of the extra baggage.
That being said to answer your last question, yes... you as Shepard can get through the suicide mission without ALL the squad surviving. That's what happened to me. As to who...there's no direct "choice" like there was in the ME1. I mean, there's choice, but who lives or dies depends on choices you make that have an impact later. There is just an extra achievement for getting through with every party member alive. I think its worth 75 gamerscore if you do it.

Everyone made it except for Mordin in the final cutscene, however I reloaded and took Mordin to the final boss and then he survived.
I've seen alot of people choose Legion or Tali for the vents and have them still die and that final cutscene is a total mystery. Maybe there is some hidden factor related to how quickly you complete segments of the suicide mission or choices during loyalty missions?

I didn't have Miranda and Zaeed loyal.
They all were saved. Got it on the first try.
I was afraid that I needed everyone loyal to keep everyone alive.
Damn good dialog option for Miranda was greyed out then I picked Jack's side even though I was full paragon.
This is fucking dumb... I hate that it is a specific illogical combination to get them to all to survive(the squad leaders are illogical the other things make sense). I also hate that there is an achievement attached to it... it should be part of the story that a character dies or not and you shouldn't be rewarded/punished either way outside of them dying or living. Damn it Bioware, you make a hell of a game but you SUCK at making achievements.

Right before you this was discussed.
Some of these deaths are particularly cheap. In my playthrough, Legion was killed as the doors were closing, since I'd asked him to move through the vents. That was fine, and not at all related to my point.
BUT, as we're all escaping the Collector Ship, there is one shot, one shot, shown of Mordin's corpse. No explanation, no death scene. A single shot establishing that, oh, hey, he's dead for some reason. Moreover, not having the appropriate upgrades on the Normandy will lead to the death of another crew member whilst the Normandy and the Collector Frigate trade attacks. It's almost comedic, since, again, there's a single shot, probably less than two seconds in length, showing a beam coming from the rafters and crushing the unlucky recipient, and then, after the Normandy crashes, no further mention of the event.
That's the most sure-fire way to cheat the audience out of legitimate closure for a character they've spent the majority of the game with. I really, really love Mass Effect 2, but this is ridiculous. Give your characters the dignity they deserve, Bioware. I feel absolutely cheated.
The Time Limit: For those unaware, once your crew (Kelly, Chakwas, etc.) is taken through the Omega 4 Relay, they WILL die one by one until you rescue them. Because of this, make sure that acquiring the IFF is the last thing you do. If you leave loyalty quests until after they go through, you will lose crew members, and will NOT get the achievement.
1st Squad Leader: Garrus (has leadership experience)
2nd Squad Leader: Miranda (has leadership experience)
Shield Barrier: Jack (is powerful biotic)
Escort: Grunt (is tough as nails)
Add those choices to the list, because they are confirmed to work. 38 Hours Play Time. Level 25.
All team member recruits were loyal. Normandy had all upgrades. Most of the biotic and tech powers were upgraded. I finished all loyalty and side missions before I went to get the IFF, Legion and his Loyalty quest, before going through the Omega 4 relay. I immediately went to rescue the crew as soon as the option was available. My Shepard was imported from ME1 and a maxxed out paragon with some renegade. Personal and party Shields, Armor, and Weapons were all upgraded. My Shepard was a soldier using the assault rifle/machine gun upgrade, upgraded sniper rifle, and collector weapon 99% of the time. I never bothered controlling the other party members during combat other than to tell them to move to a position or move to cover. I just let them do their thing and if they went down (which wasn't often) I used the upgraded unity to get them back on their feet.
I took Mordin and Miranda with me as the final party choice (use unity to keep them alive during this fight. If you don't and they go down I think they wind up dead in the end). Everyone lived except an abducted non-party unknown (at least to me) colonist or abducted non-main Normandy crewman. I couldn't tell who it was, but I did receive the achievment for getting everyone out alive, so go figure.
I logged into a "post ending" save to check the ship crew and found that every party member and every non-party crewman who had a name and you could interact with was still alive. I could have swore I saw a female crewman-abductee die when Shepard first got there. Maybe she didn't actually die, but merely fell unconcious. Or was it a cutscene glitch?
I replayed the last mission and found out that it was a colonist that died and it was entirely unrelated to anything the player could influence and therefore that death is unavoidable. This time I sent Tali through the vents and chose Mordin as the escort and that worked too. Plenty of options.
You could try sending them both through parts where they're not particularly skilled, like in the vents at the beginning.

I don't think it matters. As long as you can persuade people to see things your way (red or blue options), whether you are nice about it doesn't matter. However, I have not completed the game with 100% renegade so I am not positive.

Just finished this, I don't like how you basically have to let Mordin do the escort so he doesn't die in the end sequence. [Or take him as part of your last team?]
He's supposed to be a decent fighter no? He's a wimp! Let him stay in his goddamn lab next time around -.-'

Escort - Mordin (tried Grunt first, Mordin died at end sequence)

Shield - Samara
Bodyguards at the end - Legion + Garrus
Everyone was loyal, ship fully upgraded and almost every upgrade bought (4/5 sniper rifle damage though)
I used Tali for the vents, Garrus and Miranda for the first and second teams respectively, Samara for the shields and Grunt for the escort. I wound up losing Mordin and Jack doing it that way. I tried it again last night except I used Jack for the shields and I lost Thane right after the shield part. Are there certain party members you should use in addition to using the right people for the vents and such?
First time I tried the suicide mission I lost 3 people, not in ship. For some reason after doing Legions loyaltiy mission it didnt make him loyal, so what ended up happening was that he got shoot in the face with a rocket when trying to close the doors, for the distraction team I let Zaeed lead it and he died, everyone else lived, and when everyone was trying to make it back to the Normandy the Doctor died. (Dont care about his name)
Second time I won at the cost of every human crew member ( Not the recruited members you know the chief , engineers, the humans who got abducted by the collecters)
This was my order, Tali vents, Garrus First squad leader, Samara sheilds, Garrus Second Squad Leader, Escort None, and Tali and Garrus Final Boss
Well, I got through with no deaths, except for the kidnapped Normandy crew members, who I lost b/c I wanted to do sidequests before the endgame. All party members loyal, Normandy fully upgraded and nearly all weapon/armor upgrades researched.
1st Lead - Miranda
Tech - Legion
Escort Chakwas - Zaeed
2nd Lead - Miranda
Biotic - Jack
End Party - Thane, Mordin
Does anyone know what determines if your crew survives or not? Do they all die (except Chakwas, apparently) if you don't go after them right away? Or is there some sort of time-to-survivors ratio?

Okay. On my third try I made it through and everybody survived. That was more trouble than it was worth. I wish it were more black and white about why people died. It just seems like randomly somebody will die if you didn't choose exactly the right combination. Whatever I'm glad I know the combo that works for me. Still LOVE the game.
Okay, so I'm on my 3rd playthrough..
1st time 3 deaths, 2nd time 2 deaths
And now the person in the vents, I have tried everyone multiple times, but the person keeps getting his/her head blown off because the damn door won't close...
I have every upgrade, everyone is loyal (even miranda), max paragon..
Anyone have an answer for this? Cuz I'm getting pissed :P
I did all the loyalty missions and most sidequests before the IFF Relay. I also explored every single planet, many of them after the IFF if none of the sidequests had led me to the systems beforehand. So in a nutshell, I spent a decent amount of time just exploring around before the final mission which resulted in non-squad crew members dying. All my squad members did survive, however.
Vents - Tali
1st Lead - Garrus
Biotic - Jack
2nd Lead - Miranda
Escort - Grunt
I recommend Thane and Samara for your own party throughout the final mission. There are a lot of enemies with barriers, so Thane's Warp and Samara's Area Reave really come in handy. They also both have Throw which is great for all the husks and Collectors near ledges. They really made it a total cakewalk.
EDIT: Just thought this might be worth mentioning. I had all the ship upgrades. Some weapons damage upgrades(Shotgun, Assault Rifles, SMG) were only at 4/5.
Who did you have go into the vents? It has to be a tech person because the skill is required. In other words either Tali or Legion. For the squad leaders, they have to have some experience in commanding or leadership like Miranda, Garrus, and Jacob. Of course, the Shield Barrier has to be handled by a powerful biotic like Jack, Samara, or possibly Miranda. If all of those responsibilities are delegated properly, then the escort can be anyone, I believe. However, I chose Grunt because he's tough.
Also, I have read that Mordin is a little bit wimpy and dies a lot for unknown reasons so I took him on the final leg of the mission to keep him alive. I suppose you could send him as the escort and keep him alive, as well. I am not sure if this is necessary though because there are a lot of variables that may have caused him to die for other players.
Not sure if this is an attempt to find all posible combinations or just the basics one already figure out, in either case I did:
Team leader: Garrus
Team leader: Miranda
Last fight team members: Miranda and Samera

Ok, maybe it has to do with level? What level were you guys when you did the final mission? I have done it twice with differnt choices for vent and escort and got everyone out alive both times. My Shepard was level 25.
Maybe go back and make sure your ship, armor, shields, weapons, and skills are all upgraded as high as they can go (the ship needs to be maxed, you don't have to max all skills, armor, weapons etc, but it wouldn't hurt to do so). Make sure everyone is loyal which will require high paragon or renegade standing. It seems limiting our choices, but I would advise to never take middle of the road options when there is a renegade or paragon option to take (upper right is paragon usually, and lower right is renegade usually. The big time paragon points are blue and in the upper left corner. The big time renegade points are red and lower left corner.). Always succeed with the quick time events for easy paragon or renegade points. Concentrate on one or the other. If there is an option to go either way, you need to concentrate on one of them so that that standing can be maxxed out. If there is only one of them as an option and it is not the one you are concentrating on, it's your choice to take it or not.
Personally, I'm trying to nail down what does or doesn't effect the final outcome. It's been a trial and error sort of thing so far. Since my save has all the possible upgrades for the ship, weapon and crew, I don't think I'm in the best place to judge. I've been chipping away at the requirements slowly as everyone reports their own strategies. So far only one thing is clear - there is no definitive answer to the problem.
Anyway, I'll add your combo to the initial list as well. You never know - maybe someone else might find it useful.
Zaeed should not be squad leader. He is an assasin, therefore a loner and has no experience leading. Choose Garrus, Miranda, or Jacob as squad leaders. Garrus told us that he has lead his own team so he has experience as a leader, remember? Miranda is a Cerberus officer, so she has leadership experience. Jacob was in the alliance so he has millitary training and leadership experience as well.
I can confirm that both Miranda and Garrus work as squad leaders. I haven't tried Jacob yet.

So just finished the game, and was so close to everyone surviving. Only Mordin died at the end with the team left at the door. All characters were loyal.

Last Battle: Miranda and Garrus
So, I have no idea what would have made the professor die. Any ideas? When I go through and play again, I'd rather not have to leave Miranda/Garrus behind for the final battle, as I am a heavy user of their Overload and Warp powers...maybe Thane instead of Miranda? Idk...my Shepard is an adept if that makes any difference.
I had the required ship upgrades, but none of the character specific upgrades... :/ Hmmm, maybe that's why my Mordin died?
EDIT: Just finished reading entire thread - will try having Mordin be the escort and see how that works...

Yet for some reason the instruction manual says that charm and intimidate are available to put squad points into (top of p.15)
I had all the team loyal and ended up losing Tali, Jack and Thane. I didn't care about Tali, but I liked Jack and boned Thane, so it will hurt down the road I'm sure. At least it was fun to see Tali take a rocket to the face.
Also, I left the crew to find their own way back to the normandy. I'm assuming they died, but I didn't care enough to remember
