Mystery of the Reapers intrigues but falls short
Leviathan was a bit of an odd bird. The first Mass Effect 3 DLC is intriguing but ultimately fell a bit short. The first two acts of the DLC felt like a murder mystery a la L.A. Noir. It’s Shepard and Edi on the case! There’s clue searching, tight facial shots, and interrogation. It sucks you in: what is Leviathan? why are the Reapers afraid of it? You also get some juicy little bits about some of the races in the universe less on the forefront, like the Rachni and Thorian.
The mystery, information payoff, and return of the great Mass Effect gameplay are wins for me. But for a post-completionist, it still fell empty. The story led me to believe I was doing everything in an effort to increase my preparedness for fighting the Reapers. But I already had and won. Whereas the Shadowbroker DLC of Mass Effect 2 existed wonderfully on its own because it focused on itself, Leviathan falls flat.
All in all, it’s good, worthwhile content if you love the Mass Effect world.
