Edit 3: NOT an MMO. Maybe SP.
Russ Bullock @I wouldn't call this an MMO friend. Round based combat.
@TheMechGamer thanks brother and never say never I'm a big SP fan myself.

After two years’ of near-total silence about the fate of the Mechwarrior reboot, Piranha Games have announced Mechwarrior Online, a free-to-play, team-based multiplayer BattleMech sim. It’s also going to tell the story of the Battletech universe in real-time, starting from just before the Clan Invasion of 3050. Each day, players will do battle on behalf of the universe’s major factions, and each day in the game will represent a single day’s action in the fictional Inner Sphere. It will go live in the second half of 2012.
Mechwarrior Online (MWO) might be free-to-play, but MWO Creative Director Bryan Ekman and Piranha President Russ Bullock insist this is going to be a proper Mechwarrior game in the tradition of Mechwarrior 2 through 4, not a successor to the Xbox action game Mech Assault. Ekman says joystick support is a strong probability, and both call this a Mech sim.
“I think it’s really the Mechwarrior you know,” Bullock says. “It’s fully first-person. It’s not a new interpretation. We’re modernizing things a little bit, I think we’ll get to those questions, but certainly it’s Mechwarrior.”

A few weeks ago we saw signs of life from Piranha Games’ Mechwarrior project, following two years of radio silence. Since then, the Inner Sphere News Twitter account has been teasing images of Mechs, logos, and a possible release date.
Right now, we can tell you that the next Mechwarrior game will be PC-exclusive. We have an Overlord-class Dropship’s worth of information on its way, along with one very big surprise, so check back in two hours when we can tell you more.
Tons of info coming soon. I'm guessing when this picture is fully revealed. And yes, it looks like borderlands. I DON'T CARE, IT'S A PC EXCLUSIVE MOTHER FUCKING MECHWARRIOR.
Also, a guy on NeoGAF posted the history of this title and why it has been done for so long.
Based on recent interviews and the fact that they revealed a video prototype without any publisher, makes me guess that:
- In 2009 Piranha and S&T couldn't get greenlighted by a publisher
- Due to Microsoft having the license, they forced Piranha and S&T to only target the Xbox 360 (and maybe PC)
- This made it harder to pitch the game to a publisher because of a diminished potential market
- The game became vaporware
- Weisman leaves S&T
- Piranha Games gets hired to do part of DNF
- MW Reboot is somehow greenlighted during the work on DNF, but the concept is drastically altered (e.g. 3015 -> 3048)
