Mehul Patel was influenced by his brother Amit Patel in hobbyist game development as kids. They worked on Commodore 64 as well as an IBM PC. Specifically Mehul ran his own BBS in the 90's, here he and his brother developed Door Games like Solar Realms Elite, Barren Realms Elite, Falcon's Eye, The Arcadian Legends, and Earth:2025. It was during this time that he developed the ability for these games to operate with InterBBS capabilities, this allowed multiple BBS to interact and players across all servers to interact.
After this work he started working on a project to port the Earth:2025 Door Game to a browser based platform. Written using Borland Delphi, and hosted at Solarianet.com the game was a much larger success than he anticipated. He used many of the concepts implemented in Earth on his later project Utopia.
