An OUYA version was announced and continuously confirmed for eventual release; it did not release by the time the OUYA storefront stopped accepting new games, and instead, released on the OUYA's successor, Razer's Forge TV, published by OUYA Publishing, as well as Amazon Fire TV and Android TV on September 8, 2016.

Combat in Mercenary Kings is inspired by old-school 2D side-scrolling shooters like Metal Slug and Contra. The game also takes inspiration from the Monster Hunter series, in particular the idea of tracking bosses that move around the map as the player engages them.

Mercenary Kings features a hub area where players can pick up missions (each of which must be completed in a certain time limit), talk to NPCs, change their appearance and craft weapons. Missions can be tackled co-operatively, either online or locally.
