After all, he looks like Snake, this could explain his hatred for the patriots if the soldiers are from Cypher, and we never "saw" his actual arm in MGS 2. What do you think?

Could Solidus Snake (George Sears) be the main character?
I just think it's weird that everything in the trailer is MGS3 imagery.
@Thanatos3: Maybe I just don't remember much about Liquid compared to Solidus, but Solidus seemed like a more interesting but less cool character. With Solidus it seemed like there was just a little more depth, that they didn't really explore.
Or maybe I just unreasonably like MGS2.
@crithon: wow it really doesn't look like him.
also as cool as it would be to play as Solidus, this:

Wouldn't he be too busy being a politician and/or leading child soldiers to be in this game?

Those flower petals falling at the beginning of that trailer pretty much seals it being Big Boss in my opinion.
watch it just be some wacky shit where you play as all 4 snakes.

So basically like this but with Snakes.

So it's the Peace Walker trailer? Too bad it makes no story sense for any of the Snakes to work together.

All the snakes are fused by nano machines. He has Solid Snake's MGS1 youth, Naked Snake's one eyed-ness, and Liquid's one-armed-ness. BAM.
This is ridiculous. I can't even pretend I'm not kidding.

Turns out Raiden is renamed Snake and they make 2 Phantoms from him.

Yeah. Plus there are hints at Volgin, Boss, and other MGS3 characters/moments. I think it's pretty safely Boss.
It's not Solidus Snake. It's Snake Snake. The clone of Solid Snake, Snake Snake is sent on a mission to prove to the United States Government how much a threat falling down can be to the nation. He trips his way across the battlefield, tumbling and stumbling his way through dangerous situations most special forces soldiers have nightmares about. Can he stand, or, flop, to the challenge? Can he stop the ultimate evil, Metal Gear QWOP? Only time will tell in, Metal Gear Solid V: Still Stumblin'.
I'd actually think it'd be cooler if it was Liquid Snake. I know no arm in the beginning of the trailer probably means it won't be Liquid but I'd kinda be interested to find out Liquid went insane in the membrane.
Hasn't Kojima said he'd like to do more with Big Boss and Foxhound?
I thought Ground Zeros (ie. Phantom Pain) was confirmed to be Big Boss?

In all honesty, the more I know about this franchise...
He, Solid and Liquid are all clones of Big Boss. It's daft, but was established pretty early on (in Metal Gear Solid) - the series isn't exactly high brow.
I was kind of thinking it was Big Boss and the guy with face wraps might be Zero? But then I can't explain the missing arm.
Looks an aweful lot like Naked Snake/Big Boss...
(See below for images of the "family".)
Obviously, seeing how MGS2 is a PS2 game, it's not as easy to compare, but I'd say that our Phantom Pain-subject is a lot more similar to Big Boss, than he is to Solidus. There's also the matter of Solidus' increased aging, and us not being entirely sure which decade Phantom Pain is set in, what with there being what looks like a child-version of Psycho Mantis appearing in it, the straight spedometer in the car, the soldiers wearing the exact same gear as the soldiers in the Ground Zeroes trailer (which we know a lot more about the timing of!)... etc.
I'm not saying I know what's up with it, but I think it's a lot more likely that we're looking at Big Boss than Solidus Snake. Also, looking at Old Snake's appearance, you can see that the clones don't age identically to Big Boss, Old Snake looks different enough that it's easily possible to tell them apart, even if Big Boss didn't have the eyepatch. Also, some people have pointed out that Phantom Pain-guy has a scar on his cheek that is very similar to the one found on Big Boss' cheek... though that tends to use the mirrored image as reference, which is... problematic.
See here: Phantom Pain (???), Ground Zeroes (Big Boss), MGS4 (Big Boss), Peace Walker (Big Boss) MGS2 (Solidus), MGS4 (Old Snake), MGS1 (Liquid Snake).
@Mnemoidian: Wasn't Solidus the perfect clone of Big Boss. Anyway probably not, the imagery makes more sense if its Big Boss. Also I very much think this could lead to the origins of Mantis, you see him in the trailer near the end and in MGS 1 he mentions seeing everything on fire.
@Thanatos3: Yeah, a pure clone - no modification (except for the part where they accelerated his aging...? *shrug*), unlike what they were doing with Liquid and Solid. But it turns out that you need more than DNA to be a perfect soldier. Environment and experience are also important.
He's a really odd choice to turn into a puppet-president :P

Ground Zeroes is not Metal Gear Solid V. Kojima has said he is working on both games. All we know is that Ground Zeroes comes out first and sets up the scenario of Metal Gear Solid V. Big Boss is definitely the character in Ground Zeroes.

Would you mind actually linking, or at the very least, quoting Kojima on what it was that he said? As to my knowledge, he has affirmed that Ground Zeroes is indeed the "prequel" to Metal Gear Solid 5, which one can interpret in any number of ways, but never actually said that he's working on two different games.
I'm personally entertaining the theory that Ground Zeroes is, likely, the name of the prologue or the first act of Metal Gear Solid 5 and that the "Phantom Pain" is a later act in the same game, perhaps even just a shorter sequence. There are a number of theories that support this idea, not only would developing two games simultaneously, starring the same protagonist where one game is a direct sequal to the other, be considered as commercial suicide, but the design of the enemies (armed guards) is identical across both games with no change in graphic fidelity, not even to mention the fact that we know next to nothing about either game. All of which highly suggests that they are not just the same series, but the same game.
@Do_The_Manta_Ray: I based it on this article:
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/01/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-is-gorgeous-open-world-and-not
He's spoken several times about Metal Gear Solid 5 being in development. I don't know, I guess they could be the same game, but I just highly doubt it.
Assuming the main character is missing an eye under that bandage, it wouldn't be possible as Solidus lost his left eye, not his right, not to mention parts of Solidus's remains were used to recreate Big Boss. I still have no idea though, as this character is missing his arm... I originally thought that maybe it takes place when Big Boss was in a coma and Zero proceeded with Les Enfants Terribles and Big Boss has some funky dreams or something, influenced by the child who may be Psycho Mantis. But again; that arm is missing!
I actually stated thinking it might be Solidus since he is suppose to be the closest resembling clone of Big Boss and not much is known of Solidus before MGS2 other than the child soldiers. Or it's a failed clone on Solid Snake if Kojima wanted to be crazy enough.
@MooseyMcMan said:

What's the timeline on that again? He had to be leading child soldiers first, for Raiden to be the right age, right? Then he was president Sears years later?
That's one of the stupidest things in the whole MGS series. Guess what? Turns out you can't be president if you led a bunch of child soldiers in a 3rd world nation! The Patriots can rig the vote or whatever, but unless the Patriots control literally every journalist in every nation everywhere, it's so impossible that his past wouldn't be exposed.
I had kind of wanted this to be Solidus before I brushed up on the time lines, looking at the visual stuff like the car, the prosthetic forearm and the chopper at the end, the setting needs to be between 1976 and 1989 which would put Solidus in his teens at most. As much as I want to see more of Solidus' story, MGS V won't be that game.
The weird thing is with with that setting how could the main character be Big Boss either?, No arm and a re-damaged right eye? Who knows, maybe the events of Ground Zeroes lead to a serious case of PTSD and MGS V is all a psychosomatic response to being put in an institution >_<
The important thing to remember though is Big Boss did spend time in a coma after 1972, which like @KillaWolf13 said is when Zero got the program started to clone the twins, So there is canonical precedent for this being Big Boss, except that means the events in the hospital take place before Peace walker which seems. . . . . ridiculous.
Fingers crossed that the main character is a genetic failure of the first round of cloning, that's the only plausible way I can justify a snake of this age, in this time period with these injuries.
Whatever man I just want to play it.

I went from trying to play the original (NES) in 1988 to MGS2 this past year, and my mind was so blown in a retarted way with the naming conventions that i played a few hours into Raiden and just gave up.
The mythology seems so laughable. Not hating, it's just not for me. And it's hard to even sound serious when talking about it out loud.
