What do you hope the next Metroid game is like?

I am going to assume, or at least hope that with the Switch we're going to get a new Metroid game. I like the original Metroid side scrollers (and am actually playing Fusion right now alongside other games), but I am a bigger fan of the Prime trilogy. I would hope we get another first-person adventure Metroid game. It could use the Prime name just to indicate its similarities, but I hope it's the latest in the timeline for Metroid. The timeline was never a huge thing for me, but that's because I wasn't entirely sure where things fit and connected, so if they could make it connect to the past games in a more meaningful way that would be awesome.

I would also love if they once again put out the Prime trilogy but in HD, and maybe the option to select a control scheme more akin to a first-person shooter just in terms of analog control, where right stick looks and left stick moves the character. Another addition would be to remix or orchestrate the soundtrack, but given an option to change back and fourth. I never actually beat Metroid Prime 2... I should do that at some point. The Wii U to me didn't do much in terms of new, great first-party Nintendo games (for instance, nothing topped Galaxy or was nearly as good in my opinion), and bringing Metroid back could help a lot with making the Switch different.

@ivdamke: I don't think believing there'll be another Metroid is quite like Half Life 3 (which you make it sound like), so of course I'm optimistic there'll be another. The only thing that may worry me is what kind of Metroid game it'll be because I don't want another Federation Force... Granted I have no idea what that game is like because I had little interest in it.

I liked Other M a whole lot. If I can't get a Fusion 2, then the same 2D/3D hybrid idea but executed better.

@csl316: I liked Other M at first, but the further I got, the more frustrated I became. It was one of those 'when is this game going to end?' kind of games. Not because it was long, but because I didn't want to play it anymore. I wanted to finish it regardless, though.

    ---

I'm currently playing Zero Mission. I never beat Zero Mission or Fusion, but I really am liking them a lot. Maybe I can beat both before I play the Mankind Divided DLC, haha.

Quiet, atmospheric, moody and just let me explore cool well designed areas. It really doesn't have to be much more than that. Prime didn't quite click with me the same way Super Metroid did, so maybe 2D is better in my case, but I'd give another 3D one a chance.

No more anime though please. I love a bunch of bullshit anime stuff and I already have my fill. Just let me lone wolf it on weird planets where no one speaks other than CROAK GRAAAAGH.

The optimist in me would like a balls-hard, 2D Metroid game with no voice acting that pushes the boundaries of 2D platforming like we've never seen. (And while they're at it, retcon Other: M.)

The pessimist expects some bullshit like Federation Force.

Realistically, we probably won't get anything.

No big deal. Half the indie platformers on Steam these days are Metroidvanias. Some really great ones too. If Nintendo doesn't want my money, fine by me.

Third-person view, behind the character. No talking. Isolation. Manual aiming.

A new suit. The Metroid Prime suit is ugly. It's overly bulky and looks like a toy. The giant shoulder balls block Samus' view. Her body wouldn't even fit inside the suit in some versions, with the legs being so long and too far spread apart.

Anything at this point, as long as it's good. Gimmie a 2-D metroid with punishing difficulty, gimmie a Prime sequel, gimmie an Other M where no one speaks and the game is actually good.

Something in the vein of the Prime games, or a sequel to Fusion (maybe a little less railroading though???).

Expecting more Federation Force or Pinball nonsense though, if they ever do anything with it again.

2D Metroid for sure. I don't mind what style it is, I loved Fusion which a lot of people seemed to hate so that'd be cool.

If they finally do announce a Metroid game and it's another Prime game I'm going to be very upset, never been a fan of that series (they're good games, but not really good Metroid games).

@takayamasama: I have to assume that games like Federation Force and TriForce Heroes sell like absolute shit, because the hardcore fans of the series just skip them, so hopefully for once Nintendo has learned its lesson about making dumb multiplayer games out of good single player franchises. Probably not, though.

That made me laugh, I also totally agree. It's a shame the Wii U never got a Prime game because that could have been awesome. (and would have allowed multiple ways to play it)

I'll deal with anything from AM2R, 2.5d classic style (really doubt any of that....) to another proper Prime game.

LUCKILY, the Metroid formula is being used in better ways by so many people other than Nintendo. Super Metroid basically changed my life as a wee lad. But I've come to terms with not ever getting another Great or even Good Metroid Game from Nintendo. I did think Metroid Prime 3 was really fucking great though.

For me a 'Metroidvania' type 2d game has always meant Castlevania a la Symphony of the Night. Metroid to me is always associated with Metroid Prime, one of my all time favorites. So another Prime would be amazing.

Even Prime on Virtual console would be pretty rad.

Metroid Fusion in 2.5D - It was more linear than the other 2d Metroids but the pacing of the game was perfect. I loved the tension when you entered a room and you knew the SA-X was there and basically had to get the fuck out ASAP

    Or a new Metroid Prime

I legitimately just want another damn 2D pixel art SNES-ass Metroid. Metroid is the only series that I don't want to innovate or improve upon its own formula. I like Prime 1, Super Metroid, and Fusion. I want another one of those.

Hopefully we get another single-player Metroid but I wouldn't hold my breath. Metroid doesn't sell as well as it should and Nintendo doesn't seem to think too highly of the series. I would love to play another 2D Metroid or even a remake of Super Metroid or Metroid Fusion.

@underscore_underscore: What would "modern controls" mean? Dual analog shooter controls? The whole game is balanced around you having lock-on targeting and the game autoleads your shots to hit whatever you're aiming at.

I see this request all the time, and I really don't get what people think this control change would accomplish.

There are SO MANY 2D Metroid-like games out these days and most of them are really good so I don't really want another 2D Metroid. I want Nintendo to evolve Metroid and bring if forward like they have done with Mario and Zelda. A new revamped Metroid Prime would probably be the best way to go.

The wii collection of the trilogy already allows for those games to be played as a modern shooter, abliet by using the wii mote to control all aiming. Let me rephrase, i want a remaster similar to the wii collection but specifically allows for the right analog stick to control the aiming.

Super Metroid has manual aiming and a camera outside of the helmet. Therefore, Super Metroid Prime is Metroid Prime in third-person view with manual aiming. I want that game too. The third-person view would improve platforming, among other things.

@octopusrocketmark: Fast Racing Neo is competent, but like Wipeout, it lacks personality. I'll give it credit for having sense of speed, decent track environment variety, and appropriate techno music. Bland cars though, and I've always preferred unique drivers for each car instead of fake future sponsors/racing companies.

I mean, Metroid was doing the Metroidvania thing before Castlevania.

I would be happy with either a 2D or 3D Metroid. I wouldn't complain if the 3D Metroid was in third person but I think the series works way better in first person and the reason for that ties into my next bit.

It needs to be isolated. Metroid has progressively lost the sense of isolation and wonder that is present in the best games in the series. I don't want to travel to another planet. I don't want to talk to another being. I want to play as Samus, by herself, on a hostile alien world, with no extensive contact with anyone or anything friendly. That isolation and the lonely atmosphere it creates is one of the things that has always drawn me into this series and it's one of the things that defines a Metroid game to me. Remove that, start putting people in there or AI's or whatever, and you start to move away from one of the things that I value most about the past entries in the franchise.

I think the first person perspective of the Metroid Prime games can greatly enhance this, though the interactions with the Luminoth in Prime 2 were a little much and Prime 3, while a fine game in its own right, ventured way too far from what I want out of a Metroid game. Unfortunately, we've only had one 3D third person Metroid game and people generally thought it was kinda bad. I'm not against the idea of a 3D third person Metroid, I would just rather see it in first person.

Side note: The platforming in Metroid Prime is fine. I just got finished playing the Wii version and didn't have a single issue with first person platforming. It helps that there's not actually much in the way of tricky platforming, but it's still not a problem.

I'd like a perfectly executed, "mostly safe but willing to take some risks" take on 2D Metroid on the same kind of level as something like A Link Between Worlds. If not that, then I think giving someone (like Retro, for example) an opportunity to make a real successor to the Prime series would be an acceptable back up. I'm not even the biggest fan of the series and both of those sound really cool right about now.

What I expect, is probably less than that. Maybe they'll get Platinum to make a new Metroid game that sounds great in concept and then hamstring said game with an unworkable gimmicky control scheme a la Other M or Star Fox Zero.
