The Florida Marlins were a part of the 1993 Major League Baseball team expansion that also brought the Colorado Rockies into the National League. The Marlins, who play at Sun Life Stadium in Miami have made the playoff's twice as the Wild Card winners in 1997 and 2003, and went on to capture the World Series title each time despite having never won the Eastern division. The organization has become most known for producing some of the best young talent in baseball with a low salary budget, however perhaps negatively known for selling those players away to other teams before they reach free agency.
The team plans to rename themselves to the Miami Marlins when they enter their new stadium currently under construction in the same location the Orange Bowl used to stand. The 30,000 capacity stadium is currently scheduled to open its doors at the start of the 2012 season.
