So I'm trying to host a Minecraft server for me and my friend, and he can connect just fine, but he can't open doors, sleep, or access chests/furnace/crafting table. According to this site www.canihostaminecraftserver.com I can host a minecraft server with 3 people, plus myself.

When he removes a block through mining or shoveling or what have you, does it reappear after a few seconds? If it does, i'm pretty sure it's a lag problem (I don't think I can define it more closely, not enough bandwidth I guess). If it doesn't, who knows.

It could be lag, but you could try opping your friend. Sometimes if you're too close to the spawn point, a server will block any non-op from editing the area, as an anti-griefing measure.
