    I know I must be missing something in the patch notes or on the forums, but I cant find any discussion on what leveling actually does for you. I assume it makes you dig faster or attack harder, but I haven't recognized any changes yet.

    Yeah the adventure update is coming in (2?) parts i believe. The second is going to be 1.9 I'm guessing, and it will probably bring in the leveling and I know for a fact it will bring in the NPC's.

    Yup, as others have said the new addons will only take affect in 1.9
