Does anyone have any tips on where to find them/what level to go down in the earth approximately?

Diamonds are extremely deep and often near lava. Dig down to the bedrock and then look around. (don't dig/go past the bedrock level or you will die)

a good tip is to dig down to bedrock, find a lava pool and then just dig in a grid pattern around it, if you make a tunnel every three blocks (leaving two blocks in-tact between each tunnel) then you will be able to see every block in that section without having to dig the entire area up.  I've found TONS of diamond this way, enough to make the game a little too easy.

Once you're down deep enough you start hitting patches of lava. Just dig it all out till you have a pool of lava, then search around said pool (below and above). You should find some diamond a lot of the time.

You can't go past bedrock through normal gameplay, so that's not a concern.

@Matfei90: Did notch patch the "void" areas? I remember that there are holes in bedrock which you could throw items out or just commit suicide if accidentally jumped through. Easy to find!

I can attest to my utter horror of this not being true.

Diggy diggy more holes.

@NeverDave: Unless you found a hole through a bug in the map generation, there's no way to get through bedrock normally. Items to 0 damage and it has some infinite (or at least stupid high) resistance value.

I too have fallen into the black abyss beyond the bedrock.  Took a lot of diamond gear with me.  T_T

Damn. Notch did patch that "bug". For the longest time I thought it was a feature to the game, since it was called " the void'. It is officially gone after maps that is generated after the Halloween update.

The only time it happened to me was pretty unlucky, I'd only had the game a while and I was just digging straight down to see what would happen and managed to find probably the only one block wide hole in the bedrock for a long distance in any direction. Digging for that long and then hitting sky again I thought Minecraft had a spherical world, oh how wrong I was…

Ahaha, I find it quite interesting that you proved the surface shape of your minecraft world by digging down, and how we can't really do that for earth :(

EDIT: Just realized this bedrock jazz thread jacked our OP's topic.

Usually they are at the bottom, and you'll usually find them near lava flows. Make sure to take an iron pick-axe when you want to get them - a cobblestone pick-axe will just break the block and give you no diamonds. As for their rarity, they are supposed to be rare! but if you dig near the bottom you'll probably find at least one an hour.
