I bought Minecraft a few months back and loved it. I only dabbled in the single player as at the time the survival multiplayer wasn't working properly, and Minecraft to me is all about that survival element. Continuing on against the odds, making something out of nothing.

I played the game an obscene amount in single player, so much so that I burnt myself out before I'd even seen half of what could be done with the game. A couple of friends had also bought the game and we decided that when the survival multiplayer was fully implemented we'd get a server of our own set up and play it to death, and so last week we got our own server and we haven't been able to stop playing.

It's just so compelling. Our first night was spent in a terribly dug hole in the ground, whilst we waited for sunrise to make the journey across the sea to some crazy looking mountain formations we'd spotted. We've now got a sweet base of operations at the bottom of that whilst the top of the mountain is currently being flattened before 'Tirade Manor' is built on the top with our mining operations down in the mountain below. One of our mining sites was getting a bit too big so I set out in doing something I'd yet to try in Minecraft, and make a basic minecart system to save us walking for several minutes each time we needed to stock up on supplies. An hour or two later and we've a basic, operational minecart system. Figuring out how to get it working, and then actually seeing it running was just a brilliant moment, so insanely satisfying to see it, and now my brain is ticking over thinking of hundreds of different things I could try and get working with this.

I can understand that Minecraft isn't for everyone, and this rambling blog post isn't meant to change that, but I just had to get this off my chest.

Well done Notch. Minecraft is possibly...no, definitely my game of 2010.

I can agree with this, Minecraft is just one of those games that you can find something to love about it.  Surviving and hunting monsters, mining for minerals, building stuff.  Just so much.

Yeah, I think you could argue that since it's not a release product and the alpha came out a year earlier, you couldn't really call it GotY, but at the same time, 2010 was really when the game formed into something very cohesive and enjoyable.  If everything Notch has talked about in future releases comes to pass, it could very well be your GotY in 2011 too :)

Is beta multiplayer stable now? And I have to agree, I reckon this and Mafia 2 were my favourite games of the year.

Minecraft is neat and all, but as soon as you find diamond and have all diamond tools, there isn't much left to do at all, unless of course you are a crazy person who likes to build huge and useless things just for the heck of it.

Exploring doesn't have much use, since you don't need to go to different places to find a specific resource, you can find anything you'll ever need within 100 meters of your starting spawn, also the world generetaing, as neat as it is, will yield similar results no matter what, so you can walk for 3 hours in one direction, you wont find anything ridiculously different from your starting location, even after the biomes, if the biomes were HUGE then it would be awesome, but since each biome is but a few meters long, again, no reason to explore at all....

The nether was a great idea, but the implementation wasn't as good as I expected, it was supposed to be a great way of traveling huge distances on the normal world, but since the portals won't always be garanteed to take you exactly to the same place every time that use of the nether is nullified, but even if it wasn't it would still be stupid, since exploring has no use at all.

It actually won the PCGamer Uk GOTY btw, I don't quite agree with that, because it lacks any sort of objectives and whatnot, but hey, who am I to question that.

IMO mr Notch has lost all the interest in this thing, I would be surprised if it ever gets finished, I think that the most likely thing to happen is that he'll release a few more updates, try to iron out all the bugs and call it a finished product, no much more content in the way I guess.

Put me down as one of those crazy people. :p Part of the appeal of the game to me is there's no objectives, I'm not bound or limited by what Notch wants me to do and see. I can decide myself. When he gets around to adding the story/objective driven mode he's been talking about it's highly unlikely I even try it, but hopefully that mode will let people enjoy the game more than they would without any objectives to follow.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how long the game stays in beta for now and what new stuff gets added in that time. I think Minecraft is a game that will never be really finished, it'll get released but I can see it having a lot of updates, both from Mojang and the huge community. Will be exciting to see how it grows. :)
