I'm not even out of the opening area, and I've already sent two guards--who were armed with nothing but batons--to their deaths by kicking them off of buildings.
One of my favorite things about Mirror's Edge is that gun-play felt awful in those games. Your character wasn't a firearms expert, and that came through in the game itself. Picking up and using a gun was an option of last resort, and it made you feel like you almost cheated.
I loved that about the original. I loved having the option to use a gun, trying my best never to take that option, and not having a fun time whenever I did decide to shoot someone. Video games are about choice, and I think it's a shame that a developer felt the need to make that one for me.
I could even understand it if they decided that the new version of Faith would never take a life, but they certainly still include the option to kill people. Goodness forbid that I shoot someone in the leg so they stop trying to murder me. I'll just kick them off this skyscraper instead.
I really enjoy non-violent options in video games, and I like video games that encourage players to have a pacifist run, but it really helps matters when that's a decision that the player makes. On the bright side, I am enjoying the combat more than the first game so far.
Did anyone else feel letdown by how the developers decided to handle this?
[edit]
"All KrugerSec weapons are biometricly linked to their owner. Faith couldn't use them even if she wanted to."
And just like that, with two sentences of loading screen text, the answer has been revealed. Would have been better to put that sort of lore in the game itself, but it'll do.
