i just got my gamefly copy yesterday. and i decided to do a timetrial thing

...........and to my surprise, out of the 96 people on my friendslist, i did not have a single person to compare my times with.

I have people who play the most obscure shit you can find on my list (theres even a guy still playing FF11 and Phantasy star) and it was shocking to see that NO ONE even tried this game.

.......hope you learn EA. thats what you get for launching some untested unknown new ip in the middle of a busy holiday.
If this game came out a month early / month later, i wouldve bought this game (and pretty sure out of all the people playing Fallout3, Fable2, Gears2, COD atleast some of them wouldve done the same)

Going up against the big boys during such a busy time is risky business. You got that part right. I too think the game might have done better with a more desirable release date.

It had so much potential... then DICE fucked up and put guns in the game, which totally killed the fun for me. It could've been much better without the guns and with better level design.

Good point I agree this game doesn't need guns. Unfortunately many people would have a hard time "getting it" if guns were not in the game :(

So did you check every single of your friends achievements to conclude no one had tried it?

Lets do some thinking before we make such a bold statement.

I played over 15 hours of this game, and never once did a time trial.

This was a fun game, that needed a tiny bit of work. All stuff that will be fixed in the sequel.

I agree that it flopped really badly... I really love parkour in games and at times when your movement really flows it's very fun and rewarding but sometimes it's just frustrating. I think the biggest problem with it are the enemies which are extremely annoying and not fun to deal with.

I'm not saying that what they did right wasn't totally awesome, it's that when you have a game that's this good, the bad stuff tends to stick out more, and this game has issues that could've easily been avoided.

I actually bought Mirror's Edge instead of other games because I was much more excited about than anything that came out in the past months. But I agree, the timing was not good at all, they should have launched it earlier or waited a little while longer.
I still love it and think it's a great game though.

I like the fact that EA took a chance with a new IP in general actually. What do you want from EA the same old shit of Madden, Need for Speed? Also, that game was never hyped up that much seeing as how I never heard of it til a month before it was going to come out.

Actually, If you've seen the first trailer released for the game earlier this year, everyone who saw it was majorly hyped up for it. I know I was blown away by the trailers and demos.

dude, Soul Calibur totally did flop. there is more buzz around the new MK game or even the SF remix than SC this year.

Edit: I still stand by this statement and it amazes me just how so many morons actually bought the game. Yes I just hate what SC has become and is just bashing on SC, just like a while ago someone posted that Resistance 2 flopped despite selling 870,000 units because they just want to hate on the game.

    LMAO!!!
    SC4 sold -
    218k on 360
    155k on ps3

selling 350k+ in one month isnt a flop.  thats almost triple the sales Mirrors edge got. (Which didnt even chart on the top 10)

and "Buzz"? Soulcalibur came out in august..........This is december..........ofcourse the buzz is gonna go down after 5+ months. SC4 was no where near a flop.

None of my friends have played Banjo: Nuts & Bolts or Geometry Wars 2 either. Whatever, though. There's just too many great games coming out every year and not enough time to play them all. Did you happen to like the game? That's what really matters here.

This game was more of a test to the formula it is based on. Hopefully there will be a sequel that goes deeper into the city and the story surrounding the game, and hopefully it improves on gameplay as well.

First I ask you to stop mentioning Mount and Blade and Soulja Boy so much. Second, you speak truth. EA rushes their games a lot since they have so much to handle, and even if they have a huge budget their final result feels unfinished. about Mount and Blade, true that they did a lot witha  small budget but it still sucks.

Mirror's Edge had its positives and negatives, and I think the positives outweighed the negatives. Yes, it was really short, among the other things. At least EA attempted to try something new, and in my opinion, it was at least a mild success. I just hope they can iron these problems out in Mirror's Edge 2 (it will come), and add free-roam and free-roam co-op.

    Oh god, that'd be awesome.

Speaking of which, I hate "you have to die a lot to know what to do next" kind of games. This is what keeps me from wanting to play Resident Evil. I can understand people who get pleasure out of being misrable, but that just isn't my style.

Yeah, Mirror's Edge could have been cut some more slack with a better release date. However, it's less of an issue of business strategy and more an issue of:
-the game is very difficult and challenging (this is a very good thing). Most games now very easy to complete
-Mirror's Edge is different from anything anyone has played before
-it isn't a shooter or role playing adventure, which is not what people expect from a game that utilizes the first person perspective (just think about Geist [GC] and Penumbra: Overture [PC])
I personally think DICE definitely made something special here and can be paralleled with other gems like Gunstar Heroes [GEN] and NiGHTS Into Dreams [SAT]. The game does having occasional clipping issues with the monorail sequences, the mid level loads shouldn't be there, better AI should have been present. Though I just think that it would have given reviewers more ammunition to attack the game for it's difficulty. And I think the cutscenes should have been done in engine. Beside these three technical/presentation issues, Mirror's Edge is a fantastic and unique game.  I think people out there need to stop comparing this game to FPS titles in terms of visual accuracy and combat mechanics. However, it should be compared with other games in terms of graphical quality, technical quality, and other GENERAL aspects that make a game of any genre meet the standards of modern gaming. Hypothetically, if you were to compare the first 3rd person platformer (no one knows to expect) with the 20th 3rd person action role playing game (most everyone has played one at this point and expects games in this perspective to meet these "standards"). That platformer could be a great game in its own right, but will fall short because it doesn't meet the "standards".

It often 'looks' as if game reviewers (they're more like critics at this point) cannot make up their mind. Some will say "I want to see developers make risky ventures" or "I would like to see something new and different"... Well, Mirror's Edge came out and look what happened. Middling reviews for:
bad FPS action... it's not an FPS (the FPS genre is getting stale)
level of difficulty... it IS okay for a game to be really difficult (in case you don't remember WipeOut 2097/WipeOut XL [PS])
    Jumping puzzles... challenge
the parkour not lasting the entire level... this is the worst criticism. If you could freerun the ENTIRE level without and care or challenge that would be just boring. Just hearing that sounds rediculous and just plain stupid. That doesn't even sound like a game - it sound like a sim or tech demo.

The gaming world simply isn't for a game like Mirror's Edge, or any game that tries to be different for that matter.

You seriously think people looked at Mirror's Edge and got so confused by it that they never bought it? People never got onto it because it was marketted like a joke and put out at a bad time. Just look at the shite that gets lapped up every year in every kind of market. Were Mirror's Edge a good game, then I would sympathise.

Emotip: You put guns in your first person game, you're going to get an FPS comparison. Had DICE stayed the course and made this an actual freerunning game rather than having those lame combat sections, I daresay reviews would have been higher. And of course it's good for a game to be the right kind of challenging but this was not that kind of challenging. Jumping in first person rarely works and this game showed that. The only times I felt it really worked was when you could see her limbs and so it gave you guidance, but that was few and far between, particularly on some of the more awkward jumps. Also, to tie back in with your mention of the business plan: The game was marketted as being a parkour game. Not having it in some sections would be like having some unexpected adventure in a Madden game or something.

You put guns in your first person game, you're going to get an FPS comparison.

What about MGS 4? It had deplorable multiplayer. However, that was overlooked in most reviews. And though it is a separate mode in the game, it is still a part of the package. As for Mirror's Edge the focus isn't combat as all but two combat situations in the game are avoidable (and those two are melee oriented - no guns). So yes there are guns in the game, like there are in life. And like real life, you can pick up a gun, aim it, shoot it, and toss it asside. That's all that's needed in a game that is focused on traversing the environment in some stretches of fliud movent while being persued by heavily armored and arm people because you are caught up in some murder. It works for game that doesn't focus on it.
