It is true, I am among the admittedly relatively small group, consisting of thousands, who have decided not to give Activision Blizzard money in exchange for Modern Warfare 2. It's possible I'll play someone else's copy to see the Campaign, or pick up a used copy at a later date, but I have no intention of buying a new copy - whether at the full (And insultingly inflated) UK RRP, or at one of the many discounted prices being offered by supermarkets. And I know what you're thinking "oh Activision don't care, 2.5 million sales means you're not going to make a difference". True. But it's the principle of the thing.

A lot of people have been insinuating that those of us choosing not to purchase Modern Warfare 2 for non-financial reasons are insane, wasting our time or something to that effect. The fact is, as much as I loved Modern Warfare 1 and was looking forward to Modern Warfare 2, Activision Blizzard has spent the better part of the last year systematically destroying any goodwill I had for the game and for them. And I'm not alone. Thousands upon thousands of gamers - both boycotters and people still planning to buy the game - have been justifiably affronted by the crap Activision and Infinity Ward have been pulling.

Whether it's crippling the PC game - removing features and changing an entire culture purely on a whim (And then seeming to merely sneer about it as they casually
Oh look, an overpriced Activision Peripheral. Get used to these.

mentioned all this and seemed surprised that the assembled PC gamers didn't like it) or deciding "European Gamers should pay more in this recession because, like, we said so" - even though a basic grasp of economics will tell you there is no justifiable reason for raising the price in Europe but not in America, Activision and Infinity Ward have demonstrated a reckless disregard for their customers.

It's insulting to think that they feel we are so guaranteed to give them our money that they can just do what they like. It's the same attitude Sony had with the PLAYSTATION 3 under Ken Kutaragi - and look where that got them. He's gone from the company and the console is now called the PS3 and it's planning to one day copy the Wii. Unfortunately, because Modern Warfare 2 is a game and not a console, there's no alternative in the way the Xbox 360 and Wii are alternatives to the PLAYSTATION 3. So millions of gamers and moderately casual gamers (People who insist CoD: WaW is CoD5 and somehow better than CoD4) are going to go ahead and buy it anyway, just the way Activision dreams.

Look, Modern Warfare 2 has peripherals too! (They suck and are a cheap money grab)
Look, Modern Warfare 2 has peripherals too! (They suck and are a cheap money grab)
And hey, that's fine. It's your money, do what you want. I'm sure it's way fun. The first one was awesome. But some of us just refuse to take this shit from Activision - there was a time when I genuinely felt some affection for Activision because of their great games. So to see them as a bunch of total dickweeds (Okay, maybe just led by the world's biggest dickweed) is kind of jarring. So it may not make a difference, but it'll make me feel better:

Fuck you Activision. You can blow your overpriced factory-produced sequel out your narrow white ass, I'm gonna play some Codemasters products.

Oh, and you can shove your "tax to play" bullshit that is WoW too ya money-grabbing dicks.

As long as you've got the friends to play with, and the drive to keep playing an aging game, more power to ya. However, I've got a good 15 dudes going to pick up Modern Warfare 2 at midnight tonight, and I know we'll have a blast with the game, regardless of how evil Activision is. In my opinion, Infinity Ward still make a quality game, just like Naughty Dog.

Right, but I'm sure even the Devil has done some nice things. Perhaps he gave someone a present or something. The fact is, Bob literally said his aim was to "take the fun out of game development". There's a soul-sucking hellion right there.

Yeah fuck Activision and Bobby Kotick. But I'm still buying the game because IW makes a great shooter, plain and simple. I guess I'm not one of the cool, select, 1337 crowd who refuses to change with the times, and hates it when their favortie games get too mainstream. What a loser I must be.

I have many problems with Infinity Ward's marketing strategies, features that are in (and NOT in) the game and Bobby Kotick in general, but I am still buying this game. I know it will be one of the best games of the year so there is not much to complain in terms of quality. I am reluctantly preordering it at a Gamestop (I know I won't be able to find it anywhere for a few days unless I go to a Best Buy) and picking it up either at midnight tonight or tomorrow morning too. I find that these strategies of holding your wallet usually don't work and, honestly, I just want to play the game!!

Yeah, Bobs a typical business man with his eyes on the profit and little else, but that shouldn't affect your enjoyment of a game. If you don't think the game is worth the money, then you are absolutely right not to buy it, but don't let this guy and what he stands for be the only reason stopping you from enjoying playing it.

I uh, I don't know what you mean about the too mainstream stuff...I have no problem with mainstream games and whatnot (People on the IRC will happily attest to that in such a way as to mock me horrendously).

So I guess you're referring to the wisecrack about the moderately casual gamers, but honestly that was just a dig at some of the drivel my real life friends spout. One of them actually tried to make the case that GOTY decisions made by an officially licensed magazine carry some kind of authority and gravitas.

Really I was just making a seriously sarcastic generalization about the attitude of many folks who have their panties in a twist over the PC version of the game, nothing personally toward you or about you. Frankly I'm just tired of hearing about it. Isn't it enough to not buy the game and move on with your life? So many people have become apologists for boycotting this game that it seems like nothing more than a bandwagon now.

Yeah I understand your point, and fair play to you for taking a stand. Unfortunately I waste my money on nearly every new appealing game that comes out, and even though I'm not hugely excited for MW2, I've already handed over my cash for the PC version.

If you've got a reason to be pissed off then more power to you for not buying the product. My only problem with MW2 has been the price and that ridiculous RRP. I wasn't planning to buy it, but now being able to get it day 1 for £20, my only issue has been made more than obsolete.

At least you're not the only one who feels that way. I, too, refuse to give Activision any of my money. I might rent MW2 or buy a used copy, but they won't be seeing a penny. Kind of a shame Blizzard is part of that company, though, because I would love to have gone back to WoW eventually. But hey, if you feel strongly about something you have to be willing to make some sacrafices, and I'd rather not play any CoD, Blizzard or Spider-Man game if it means keeping Activision's greedy little paws off of my money.

I really hope they will rapidly lose more goodwill, and more customers.

The problem with Bobby Kotick is that he has no class and just openly acts like a jackass.

LOL, god forbid people don't like generic FPSs. It is not that Modern Warfare 2 is or is going to be bad, but it isn't very unique in a lot of ways. It isn't everyone's cup of tea.

With purchase of every copy, you are telling Activision that fucking customers up the ass is cool.

" At least you're not the only one who feels that way. "

Stop using "good will" the makers of CoD:MW2 do not owe you or anyone else anything.  What exactly makes them greedy?

I also disagree with Activision's ways. But people still buy their games, so they are gonna still go what they are doing.

No, it's about not wanting to give money to them after the way they've been acting. Playing it doesn't really matter.

Its not the developers fault right?

The actual makers of this "modern warfare two video-game software product" didn't rape any babies as of yet so what are you actually trying to accomplish?

Don't hurt yourself trying to stop Corporations from doing what they do best! Just get the game and don't be the odd one out when your friends are probably preparing for the Midnight launch thing.

...Nothing, I'm just choosing not to give them my money. I have no objective in doing so, I just don't want to line Activision's pockets.

I won't be buying it cause Im not a big FPS player, I'll probably rent it and finish the campaign. But why does everyone feel the need to justify their decision to not purchase MW2.

" As long as you've got the friends to play with, and the drive to keep playing an aging game, more power to ya. However, I've got a good 15 dudes going to pick up Modern Warfare 2 at midnight tonight, and I know we'll have a blast with the game, regardless of how evil Activision is. In my opinion, Infinity Ward still make a quality game, just like Naughty Dog. "
Good thing you don't have a few more friends buying.  9v9 is pretty sad and pathetic, pass.  I'm sure its up to console standards though.

That's still 1/15 of his salary before taxes.  Do you give away that much of your money?

Not to get hung up on this Bobby Kotick charity thing, but as much as that seems like a fair comparison, it totally is not.

Really? So if when the Montgomery Bus Boycott had been going on, black bus riders had just said "Well, I won't pay, but I'll still ride the bus anyways," that would have been at all effective? The 'principle' of a boycott is that you forgo something to make a point, not that you do the same thing through other means to save yourself money. I fucking hate the level of entitlement of this generation.

I'm sorry, are you seriously likening me simply not wanting to give money to people whose practices I dislike to the Montgomery Bus Boycott? Cos that's just stupid dude. I'm not attempting some earth-changing campaign here. Frankly I don't care one way or the other if the game is a success or not. My point is simply that I myself refuse to contribute to Activision's coffers because of the way they behave. Welcome to the free world, I'm entitled to do so. The "boycotter" in the title is simply over-dramitisation - you might also notice there's not really any confessions. Don't get hung up on the wrapper, the message is simple: I have decided Activision is not a company I wish to support financially. That's it. The rest of you go ahead and buy the game if you want, no skin off my nose.
