The sequel to 2007’s wildly successful first-person-shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues the story of American and British soldiers fighting Russian ultra-nationalist forces.
" I like that you say it's the principle of the thing, but that you might play it at a friend's house anyways. That's not principles. "
No, it's about not wanting to give money to them after the way they've been acting. Playing it doesn't really matter. "
Really? So if when the Montgomery Bus Boycott had been going on, black bus riders had just said "Well, I won't pay, but I'll still ride the bus anyways," that would have been at all effective? The 'principle' of a boycott is that you forgo something to make a point, not that you do the same thing through other means to save yourself money. I fucking hate the level of entitlement of this generation. "
I'm sorry, are you seriously likening me simply not wanting to give money to people whose practices I dislike to the Montgomery Bus Boycott? Cos that's just stupid dude. I'm not attempting some earth-changing campaign here. Frankly I don't care one way or the other if the game is a success or not. My point is simply that I myself refuse to contribute to Activision's coffers because of the way they behave. Welcome to the free world, I'm entitled to do so. The "boycotter" in the title is simply over-dramitisation - you might also notice there's not really any confessions. Don't get hung up on the wrapper, the message is simple: I have decided Activision is not a company I wish to support financially. That's it. The rest of you go ahead and buy the game if you want, no skin off my nose. "
Holy foxtrotting shit. Explain to me how they "behave", because I dont get it. Is making the game the way they wanted to make it some kind of problem for you idiots? What do they owe you? Did they sign some secret agreement that said they would cater to your every whim?
I get the protest, I get the anger because YOU DIDNT GET YOUR WAY. What I dont get is why you people wont shut the hell up about it.
@Jensonb: man im feeling your pain so much, i fucking hate activision but about an hour ago I thought "fuck it, cod4 is still the game I play the most at the moment and I know mw2 will be the same, I will for out the cash and hand it to that shit face devil". I feel like a weight is off my chest
People don't shutup about it because your so easy to troll, clearly. And yes, I did make a secret pact with Infinity Ward and by breaking it they are now cursed with the blood of Andagar.
WHAT THE FOXTROT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Anyway, I don't live in Europe or plan to buy this on a PC so I don't really care. IW makes quality games and I will continue to support them. Activision, not so much but I consider this an IW game and then an Activision game. But yes, Bobby Kotick is an enormous asshole.
I'm not buying the game either, for two reasons. Firstly; and most importantly; I'm bored of generic FPS's, and they don't come more generic than CoD [apart from Medal of Honor maybe...] so I don't want to waste my money and would rather put it towards something better like Dragon Age or Borderlands [both of which I still need to pick up]. Secondly; fuck Activision and their insane prices hikes, brah. Until Diablo 3 that is...
@Damien: 1/15 is not a percentage, it's a fraction. Setting that aside, you seem to have missed my point. The proportion that you can conceivably give away without it causing you problems is higher the more you earn. That's why income tax rates are higher the more you earn.
First they came for the dedicated servers, and I said nothing, for i was not a PC Gamer.
Etc.
Calling this executive the devil isn't just ridiculous, it's fucked up. He's not a robot, he's a guy. That gave a million dollars to charity. The fact that he made a PC game more controlled for the sake of the dollar means that he is doing his job to his shareholders.
" @Jensonb:How much DID you give to charity recently, then, and what fraction of your income is it? "
Anywhere from 0/1 to about 1/20 of my earnings per month (Less than £200/month) depending on the situation. Not that it's of any relevance. You're blowing this whole charity thing way out of proportion. It's not got anything to do with the subject at hand. My point is he's an asshole in the way he operates his business. His charitable donations don't really change that.

Then don't patronize the business. He is not the devil.
" You can stay on your high horse. I will be thoroughly enjoying Modern Warfare 2. "
This "
Not this surely.
@Jensonb: I agree with you, and though i never played MW, and will probably grab that before i play the second, i wouldn't buy MW2, as a matter of principle. I don't like who screws with my money, as even smiles as it takes away. "
Your money is currently in your hands, it was not in the hands of Activision before this. What principle is this? Don't mess with the PC Game model of $10 cheaper with dedicated servers?

Yes. Why would I want the model changed where I lose options and money?

Congratulations, you missed the point.
And you completely proved his.
Yeah, I'm not playing Modern Warfare 2 either. I haven't been receiving hatred from anybody though, and I don't understand why it's such a big deal that you're NOT going to play a game? I think you should stop taking this so seriously and let people play what they want to. If you're not playing it, that's cool. If you're playing it, that's cool. I don't understand why we all have to shove it all into each others faces.

i think you're kind of delaying the inevitable with PC pricing, that had to go up at some point. The $50 game started over 10 years ago, and costs have gone way up since then. As for dedicated servers, that's hardly a principle. That's a value (as in money) issue. Some people like matchmaking for its simplicity.

Yap... But that's not all modding also was removed for instance.
The thing is this can make a trend, as pc fps players can loose what advantage was in terms of the console versions. It is possible, but i don't like who plays the arrogant and charges more and gives less, and still thinks that it will sell like hot cakes.

You're quite sure of yourself... or are you trying to justify your opinion based on... nothing at all besides your mental view of the world?
" Yeh, that's the definition of a percentage, but the percentage in this case is still the same: 1/15. And the question remains. "
Percentage is the fairest way to make the comparison, but you need to make sure you taking the percentage from the same areas. In this case, I would bet it shouldn't be taken from one's total wage, but instead from their disposable income.
If he's making $15million, his cost of living % is gonna be really low and his disposable income % is gonna be really high, compared to someone who makes minimum wage at a part time job.
Activision can do whatever they like with PC users. Most PC gamers are thieves who would sooner get illegal copies of games for free. This is why the PC game market is so dry. Why would you make a game for a platform where it gives people the opportunity to easily make illegal copies?
While I also strongly dislike Activision, aswell as Robert Bowling, and agree with alot of what you say, since I have a 360 and a good PC, i'll just get the 360 version, that's where my friends are anyway. While I agree that consumers have to take a stand against greedy, oppresing publishers or developers SOMETIMES, sometimes it should just be about the game, and not the people behind, then your letting them keep you from a good time. So just play the game dude, it will be fun, and Giantbomb users are putting together a big clan so we can always have dudes to play with.
You know what? It's a game not a company, and if you won't buy the game because of the publisher (THE PUBLISHER WTF?!) then that is just sad, very sad you will not have the privilege of enjoying this piece of art. There will be a million people at Union square tonight at 12:00 to watch: "Philadelphia Phillies star pitcher Cole Hamels (2008 World Series Champion/MVP) will lead a Modern Warfare 2 multi-player team against a squad led by the newly-minted 2009 World Series Champions/New York Yankees CC Sabathia and Jerry Hairston."- RB Event details on IW.com while you sit and ponder how hurt Activision is because YOU and 1000 others are not buying the game due to Activision being the PUBLISHER. Again, I would feel pain for you BUT I will be to busy playing MW2.
Got it today. Great game ! i think it is now illegal to call this game anything but amazing. Oh its the prestige edition i got and i bought the renegade edition of dj hero and recently got guitar hero 5. I wasnt interested in tony hawk but now after reading this i think i might get it to :P

I object, there is no sanity or logic in any of this.
Everyone on here does relizes that a huge chunk of the people that will buy MW2 don't even know who the publisher or devs are they just buy it because EVERYONE is talking about it and it has the words Call Of Duty in it. This is what Activision is counting on...

Okay, I know 1/15 is a fraction and not a percent. It converts to 6.67%. That doesn't make my argument moot. You seem to have missed my point. Have you donated as much money, percentage-wise, as Kotick has? It is a simple question. You brought detrimental effects and income tax into this. You probably make significantly less money than Kotick, but probably your cost of living is proportionately lower. That is why a percentage or fraction is the fairest way to assess this.
And regardless, I know this doesn't make Kotick a saint, but he is just doing his job, which is to make the largest profit for the company he runs and its shareholders, by whichever means he sees fit. He may not have the greatest public image, but currently, he seems to be doing a pretty good job and that's all he cares about. It just irks me to see people complain about him doing his job and then list him and his "evil tactics" as a reason not to buy a game.

Good thing no one cares. If you're not going to play the game, fine, I understand that. But no one wants to hear about the fact that you're not playing the game. If you want to boycott, cool, you're not going to make a difference first off and second, do it silently because no one here or anywhere else cares what you have to say.

@Jeust: Cool, you don't need to play it either. So, go talk about other games now because no one wants to hear about how much you don't care about Modern Warfare 2 but feel the need to talk about how much you totally care about it for hours on end.
