What really got me was that part near the beginning, during one of the loading screens, where Shepherd was going on about how every fight was America's fight, and it made me remember how your military continuously pokes its nose where it doesn't belong.
EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I love the U.S. for other things, like Jazz and McDonalds, just not for your military.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Game » consists of 22 releases. Released Nov 10, 2009
The sequel to 2007’s wildly successful first-person-shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues the story of American and British soldiers fighting Russian ultra-nationalist forces.
Did you find the overt Patriotism annoying?
@MB: God dammit. Ah well, a thread is not a thread without at least one mention of Red Dawn.
It's not as bad as war films (Saving Private Ryan, opens with an American flag. Tears and sad memories, you'd think that America was the only country fighting in WWII, which they joined 3 years after it started)
So I think Call of Duty is a known quantity
Other than the story being so dumb, the only thing that specifically bothered me was all the sad music that played, 'ohhh it's so sad all these cities destroyed in such a dumb story'. They should have just kept with the rocking music every minute of the game, I prefer that over the cornball melodrama.
" It's not as bad as war films (Saving Private Ryan, opens with an American flag. Of course there's gonna be an American flag.
@Bones8677:
Yeah, I thought that the tone was quite the opposite, actually.
All these quotes about nations not being able to survive the fissuring of the atom, how patriots are boorish, etc. I think this poll quite misses the point.
The fact that the game makes its point very crudely is another matter. It's just another dumb blastfest this time round, unfortunately. But a fun one.
@Bones8677: While I agree with you about the quotes, I felt like they were contradicted by what actually happened in the game. It's all very well to critique something like HOOAH-style warfare, but there was little irony or commentary outside of those quotes. Thats my reading of it anyway.
@Diamond: I agree, though the music in that game was wonderfully produced, so that kinda offset it for me.
well considering that the patriotic shepherd turned out to be a bad guy is quite telling as well.

So you wanted a 2 hour movie that told the stories of soldiers from every country that fought in WWII? I'm sure that would've worked out great, you're such a fucking genius.
"True, that was a nice touch. I'm certainly not trying to say that the entire game was like this, just a couple of moments that got me.well considering that the patriotic shepherd turned out to be a bad guy is quite telling as well. "

As a Brit, absolutely. I'm just thankful the game isn't solely "America, Fuck Yeah!" like so many of these things are. Thank goodness for Price and MacTavish.

The point is, there's barely any indication that there were Brits, Irish and French soldiers on those beaches too. A bit OT, but I just wanted to point that out. I have no comments on the game.
" @Bones8677 said:Ok, I admit I haven't seen that movie in years, but I got Arlington because that cemetery also has endless rows of white crosses, looking at some pictures they look almost exactly the same. You're complaining about a necessity portrayed in a video game where the characters needed it most.
Considering that most people I've met don't really notice it, it's not that the game is overtly patriotic, its that you are overtly anti-patriotism. Which is fine, but your complaints are better spent on something other than the contexts in which Call Of Duty presents patriotism.
People are upset that an American movie about American soldiers in WWII is patriotic? Remind me to get annoyed whenever another country creates any media that's remotely patriotic for their own country.
@Weltal said:
" Uh, it's the army. They're fighting for their country and risking their lives so of course it's a fucking patriotic show case, I'd expect nothing less. Otherwise what's the dialog? "Let's get those other sensible people! They have opposing view points and I respect that!" "I think that would be pretty hilarious and would buy a game that had this satire.
Um I didn't really notice much Patriotism beyond the realistic behaviour of American soldiers.
In-fact on the whole the Modern Warfare storyline has been extremely none patriotic, the first game saw the Americans going in gung ho on faulty intelligence and getting blown up because of it. Hardly a propaganda piece for the Americans when its the British SAS who spend the rest of the game cleaning up the mess.
The story is a little far fetched in the same way that Tom Clancy stories are but the Identity of the American military and political systems seems well represented and certainly not overtly Patriotic.
Which is allot more than can be said for most of the other American developed military shooters.
@Weltal: That made me lol, its so true.
@Fei: I agree.
@Illmatic: I wasn't expecting less patriotism, I was expecting smarter patriotism. Rather than "Every fight is America's fight", I'd rather something that showed a little self awareness in regards to the fact that most of the world looks at the U.S. as a meddler in the affairs of other countries, rather than the almighty protector of truth and piece. I can handle all the HOOOOAH's if they balance it with that.

Well, it all depends on your philosophy of whether or not the world's only superpower left should be obliged to help the rest of the world.
@Infininja: I got the impression that he was just evil, he seemed pretty sane in most regards. Of course as a maniacal terrorist, you probably can't rule out the fact that he's also crazy!
