If that would be the case I believe that Infinity Ward will brake off of Activision in the same manor that Bungie did with Microsoft. Activision will keep the Call of Duty name, while Infinity Ward will move ahead with the Modern Warfare name and a new IP and will distance them selves from the Call of Duty name as much as possible.

I don't get the big deal with CoD... however I imagine it will sell a lot, just not that much.

IW will break off from Activision in the same way Bungie did from MS?  I seriously doubt that.  Bungie was let go under the condition that they give Microsoft a first look at everything they make.  Activision loves money far too much to allow such a cash cow go.

If the conditions at IW get bad enough it's likely that most of the tallent will leave and form a new company in the same way that IW was created by guys who left the Medal of Honour team

@Hitchenson: Me either. I think it's because of the multi player though, as CoD4 had a lackluster single player campaign. CoD 4 is a very well polished game but it still suffers from it's own limitation.

That number is rather large, but considering it's incredibly popular on PC, Xbox, and PS3 i guess it's possible.  One things for sure, if you like COD4 and/or WAW you will definitely love MW2.

also, I just saw this over on Gamespot.  WAW already sold 11 million, so I'd say MW2 will definitely reach that number.

Well it's the game pretty much everyone will want to buy.  It's going to sell a lot.  I have no idea how many shooter fans there are across the three platforms though.

I can see this definitely making that benchmark. Obviously not in one, two or even three months but in a reasonable amount of time this game will definitely break 10-11 million.

I remember reading somewhere that WaW just broke 11 or 12 million but that was in 8 or 9 months. The game will sell millions but I just don't think it'll sell that much in such a short time.

    HOW IS THIS NEWS?!?

How is speculating something that will or won't happen in the future worth the amount of time it took someone to write this? I'm not denying that MW2 is going to sell a fuck-ton, and probably deservedly so if Infinity Ward's past record is any indication. But analysts "assuming" and "anticipating" stuff based on graphs and charts is really about as much news as when someone gets on my TV and tells me that gas prices are (probably) going to go up tomorrow.

It is like everyone is so busy trying to get the story first, we've decided to report on things before they happened.

@Mordukai In general, I'm pretty laid back. But the reporting of analyst predictions is one thing I've never understood.

And to be clear I'm not bad at you for posting this; its a perfectly fine thing to have a thread about. I'm more just dumbfounded with how people like this can say something and anyone besides executives really pay attention.

Read it earlier. It's... attainable, but not a high chance. Depends on how popular it is, the consumer demands and if recession doesn't bite sales.

I really doubt it, dont get me wrong i think it will sell VERY well. But after talking to many of my friends who are semi-gamers, they dont  really think of Cod4 as modern warfare, they think of it as CoD4. And when i said they were making a new CoD4, they didnt even know about it. (one of my friends even asked me if CoD6 was still coming out)

Honestly, who gives a fuck what they predict. These guys are no different than the ones that has the purpose of selling a product using extensive business techniques. I find it amusing if people are stupid enough to purchase it just because of a big number.

I'm willing to bet that's what they are hoping will happen.

Also, is this game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 or just Modern Warfare 2?  All I've seen is Modern Warfare 2 popping up on EVERYTHING, but there are still people calling it Call of Duty...

As far as the story goes, 11 million isn't impossible, especially for Modern Warfare 2.  The thing is getting fanfare receptions of joy that rival Halo with no problem.

@jakob187: Apparently, internally, it's known as both. It seems that they're torn, they're trying to get everyone to call it MW2, but they're still calling it CoD: MW2. Sort of confusing.....

Yeah. I also find it annoying that some gamers gun for multiplayer first when they get the game and not even bother with the singleplayer. I heard 30% didn't even complete the first mission from IW statistics.

It's just "Modern Warfare 2". Infinity Ward has dropped Call of Duty from the name; so you can think of the MW games as a new series. Most people still call it COD 'cause they're either used to it, it sounds better or just being generally uninformed and ignorant.

I'm probably going to have trouble calling the game by its name.

Even though IW dropped the CoD name from MW2 its still a CoD game. Its got the same narrative, gameplay mechanics, etc.
