A friend is moving back to the state in a couple months, he owns a WiiU and a 3DS. I own a WiiU and a 3DS. Will we be able to play 4 player with these or would we need 4 of the same device? I've searched the internet but the answers have not been very clear.

@yi_orange: pretty sure you need 4 of the same because the 3ds uses the wii u to get online

Sadly the answer appears to be No. Information taken from Here

One Wii U can get one 3DS/3DSXL (And probably 2DS) Online. Sadly once the 3DS connects to the Relay the Wii U cannot do anything until your done playing MH3U / using the relay app. I'm sorry but it appears you cannot have 4 players with this setup. Your going to need 4 Wii U's or 4 3DS's or a mix of both to get the relay working, ie somebody owns both but only has MH3U on the 3DS but has a Wii U to setup the relay for themselves.

This is a rather dumb, Capcom. Please do not repeat this mistake with MH4U.

If i'm wrong about this please correct me.

    Happy Hunting.

I think it might be possible to get a three player local multiplayer session set up, with the Wii U hosting and the two 3ds's joining wirelessly. But there'd be no way for the second Wii U to connect at that point.
