I haven't paid much attention to MK since MKII but I know a lot of people have a large amount of hate for Quan-Chi. I'm just wondering when it comes from. From what I've seen so far in the newest release (I've just beaten Shao Khan) he seems like a fairly interesting character. Is he really that bad in previous MKs?

One of the goriest fighting game franchises returns to its roots, introducing a new story that re-tells the events of the first three Mortal Kombat games (with a unique twist).
Why do people hate Quan-Chi?
Personally I think Quan Chi is not a terrible character by any means
I am looking forward to killing him in the next MK though.
The fucker.

Pretty much this. I have no bearing on Quan Chi strictly as a character because this is the first Mortal Kombat game I've played, but storyline-wise, I can't wait to kill him because yo, that guy's a dick.
He seems okay in the new games. In the old games, he was pretty much just there to set off whatever plot device was needed for the next game to happen, and also was a smarmy douchebag. Which he still is, but this time there's some foreshadowing to it.
I think some of the hate comes from the fact that once he entered the series he became involved in every plot thread. He had his hands in everything. If something happened, literally anything, Quan Chi was involved.
People don't like Quan Chi because he is in this game, but wasn't a part of the first three Mortal Kombat games. But the fact is, Quan Chi is a major character in Mortal Kombat lore.
I never really had much of an issue with him. As far as I know, Brad's only publicly stated reason as to why he doesn't like him is because he's an evil sorcerer, which MK already had (Shang Tsung).
I mean, why complain about the proliferation of ninjas and robots in a fighting game when there's a second evil sorcerer running around? :P
I really like Quan Chi a lot too. He's really the standout from MK4 (and maybe Reiko, but let's face it, he's just Nightwing) and his ties in with Scorpion, and the plan to kill Liu Kang and Shao Kahn that he helped with were pretty good.
" I think some of the hate comes from the fact that once he entered the series he became involved in every plot thread. He had his hands in everything. If something happened, literally anything, Quan Chi was involved. "pretty much. every other character from 4 was pretty forgettable, and i can't even remember what their role in the story was.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that he basically makes Scorpion his puppet. Scorpion is the favorite character of the series, and yet Quan has him chained like a dog.
He's not too bad in this new MK game, about as well rounded as others. Now on the arcade ladder or story mode, fighting against the top 3 (Shang Tsung/Goro or Kintaro/Shao Khan) there's so much cheezy cheap moves going on that they get most of my hatred in this game, the playable version on Shang Tsung is fine but the AI controlled version sometimes just gets somewhat cheezy on it's moves & escalates with the last few matches.
Well, three reasons:
" Well, three reasons:If you want to be technical, he was introduced in MKM: Sub-Zero which was an even worse game.1) He was introduced in MK4. MK4 is a bad, bad, bad game with bad, bad new characters2) He's a mcguffin for post-4 MK. If anything happens, Quan Chi/ostensibly Shinnok did it.3) Last, but certainly not least: his fatality in MK: Deadly Alliance. Really Ed? Really?"

I wanted to kill him since I saw Scorpion's ending in Armageddon.Scorpion finally gets what he wanted and Quan Chi had to fuck that all up.As a character there's nothing wrong with him.If anything he was better than Shang Tsung in a lot of ways because he was always plotting and scheming behind the scenes. He was a hell of a lot more mysterious and no one really knew what he was up to which made him a lot more dangerous.Plus pitting Scorpion and Sub-zero against each other was really clever.
Have to say though, I like his fatalities. It's funny seeing a crazy powerful sorcerer with all sorts of magical abilities dispose of people in just purely savage ways.
And to counter that, it's stupid that a crazy powerful sorcerer with all sorts of magical abilities gets his ass beat twice in the story mode by mortals, and he even has an extra dude fighting with him both times.
1.How was MK 4 a bad game?It was mostly on a 2-d plane. You couldn't seamlessly move in 3D,you had to use a button to sidestep." Well, three reasons:

2.So,where's the issue in that?
3.His fatality in MK 4 made up for it:
" Cause he looks like Kratos' annoying little brother...I think that might be why. "Quan was around long before Kratos ever was. And Quan's not annoying. He's pretty dope. This is a guy who ripped off a dude's leg and beat him with it for a fatality. How can ya not like him? Mad love for ya, Rich D!
I was just never into the character, I don't hate him. Although fighting against him is pretty annoying sometimes. I don't really hate characters in MK, I just hate when and if they're cheap when you face them when they're AI.
" I was just never into the character, I don't hate him. Although fighting against him is pretty annoying sometimes. I don't really hate characters in MK, I just hate when and if they're cheap when you face them when they're AI.I'm still deciding who is worse Shao Khan or Seth from Street Fighter."
Isn't Seth that guy that can regenerate his health?
I would assume its the same reason people hate Starscream in Transformers. They are basically the same character.
i love him in this game.....his moves are fun to do and I always feel some silly sense of accomplishment when I figure out how to string a combo with some moves which I've done with Quan Chi. He's good in my book.
" @Sanious said:The Street Fighter 3 boss, Gill, resurrects himself which regenerates his health. Seth is the SF4 boss who has no such ability." I was just never into the character, I don't hate him. I don't like him because he's the MK universe deus ex machina and he just dons't seem to fit with the rest of the characters. While the rest of the cast is campy, he comes of as just silly.
Also yeah. MK4 was fine. Its revisionist history to say MK1-3 are "classic" and MK4 is the beginning of the shitfest. No, MK4 took out a lot of bullshit that MK3 added. And it has the best endings of any MK game. And the end of the day, people just wanna "me too!" the staff, like being an opinion lemming makes you closer to them." @SirOptimusPrime said:

He looked really dumb in MK4 when he was first introduced, I can only guess a lot of people still hold that against him.
I think it was just that Quan Chi was in shitty Mortal Kombat 4, that's pretty much it. He's actually pretty awesome in this game, though and I liked him in Deadly Alliance.
That said, I am a little nervous in the direction the NEXT Mortal Kombat game could be going character wise.
It seems pretty clear, to me at least, that as far as the story is concerned, the next MK game will probably start phasing in the MK4+ era characters, since the majority of the classic characters are dead by the end of the story. I have a hard time believing that they are willing to let so many characters disappear into the ether. They'll likely won't cut anyone from the playable roster, though, since there doesn't need to be a story justification for characters in versus modes." " @ryanwho said:MK4 Gold is better than MK3. Animalities are the dumbest shit in the universe.
