Attributes

Attributes are a numerical representation of a character's abilities who have their roots in RPGs. Today, attributes have spilled over to a wide range of game genres.

Challenges

Any game where players progress through difficult challenges that usually provide points or medals based on performance.

Character Select Screen

A concept in games with multiple characters, a screen with pictures of all playable characters with the possibility of stat listings.

Countdown Timer

The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.

DNAS

DNAS was Sony's solution to all of the online cheating on PS2 games. It was also introduced as a means to discourage and prevent illegal copies of games to be played online.

Full Motion Video

FMVs are pre-rendered videos used in place of real-time graphics. Using FMV was an attempt to make videogames look "more like movies", sometimes with CGI animation and others with live-action actors speaking directly to players. The downside is that FMV requires a lot of disk space, and live-action FMV in particular can look terrible by comparison.

Heads Up Display

A heads-up display is a graphical overlay of vital information used in most modern games.

Honda

Honda manufactures vehicles such as the Civic, S2000 and the NSX. Honda is featured in racing game franchises such as Gran Turismo, Forza and the Need for speed series.

Laps

A lap is one circuit around a race track. This is featured in many, but not all racing games.

Minimap

The minimap is a small, simplified version of a larger map. This plays a vital role in many games, especially Real Time Strategy, where it is important to have an overview of the entire map.

Motorcycle Racing

Jump on a motor-powered bike and race against the clock or opposing drivers. Besides pure racing games, other genres may also feature this activity.

PlayStation 2 CD-ROM

Early and smaller PS2 games were produced on CD-ROM rather than DVD-ROM. They are easily recognized by the iconic, deep blue color of the underside of the disc.

Polygonal 3D

Who needs 2D when we've got 3D? 3D, or 3 dimensions, is what we're used to seeing in almost every game these days, letting us do all sorts of awesome stuff like run in circles!

Rain

Rain can heavily increase the atmosphere of a video game. Some games use it to add detail to an environment, while other games use it to make it difficult to see.

Time Limit

When a certain amount of time is given to the player to reach a goal or finish an objective.

Time Trials

Players compete against the clock to secure the fastest time possible. This is often added to racing games for extra replay value and typically requires a higher degree of skill.

Unlockables

Extra objects, characters, or content in a game that can only be accessed after completing a certain task such as completing the game, or by using cheat codes.
