Sony's doing a NFS sale this week, and I'm wondering about the differences between this and Hot Pursuit. Is it pretty much just one has police events and the other doesn't, or are there other standout changes between games?

They both have police events. Most Wanted is actually considered a spiritual successor to Burnout Paradise, taking place in an open world where you just drive anywhere and do kind of anything. Hot Pursuit plays more like your traditional NFS, but a focus on racers against cops and modes and events to play as either. My two cents? Go with Hot Pursuit.
