Once a kind and noble ruler whose title of "The Just" was well earned, William came to fall under the influence of the time-traveling wizard Moebius. Accepting Moebius as an ally, William allowed himself to become corrupted, transforming from a ruler loved by his people to a sadistic despot and tyrant, eager to force Nosgoth to its knees.
Forming his own army called The Legions of the Nemesis, William embarked on a lengthy campaign of terror, slaughtering, torturing, and pillaging all in his path. After decades of conquest, William, now calling himself "Nemesis", set his sights on the neighboring kingdom of Willendorf. Though Willendorf's king, with assistance from the Vampire Kain, mustered an army to resist the Nemesis Legion's advance, they were ultimately bested on the field of battle, allowing Nemesis to continue his slaughter unopposed.
However, Kain had acquired a means of travelling through time and used it before Nemesis' men could kill him, ending up in the time when Nemesis was still William the Just 50 years prior. Realizing he had an opportunity to prevent the atrocities of Nemesis before they even began, Kain tracked down William and killed him. Unfortunately, this had been Moebius' plan all along: Kain's killing of William at a time when he had not yet turned evil caused him to become a martyr, inciting his people to launch a genocidal war against the vampires of Nosgoth, trading one grim outcome for another.
