Just a couple of hours a go the team at Game-hackers released " Tanooki V0.1 BETA" a program that allows people to remake any level of the game however they want. Of course this is just their first release so the program does not look all that fancy but it is fully functional. I am mighty curious to see how this program will evolve in the upcoming days especially since another group announced that they are working in a similar project.

So as was to be expected just a couple of hours after the release of this program here is a rough version of W1-1 from Super Mario Bros for the NES remade using Tanooki:

(This has apparently been captured with FRAPS of a pc running the game via Dolphin hence the poor frame rate)
(Oh great, 2 typos in the title...)

I hope they're able to get the levels looking somewhat polished... Floating backgrounds suck.

Will it? Because I'm pretty sure the only thing substantial anyone will do with this is remake every Mario level, just like any other editor. There have been Mario 1/3/World hack editors for years, how many extreme levels have you seen? I've seen a few, certainly, but mostly I just see remakes and its a bummer.

Naturally I can assume "New Super Kaizo Mario" is already being worked on. I'm scared.

I think that that is mainly due to the editor only being out for 2 hours and it being an early Beta. On the website they are working on sorting out which object is has what hex code so once that is done people will be able to locate all the assets that are in the game and use them in their custom levels.

Anyway here are two other videos of what people have done with it so far. Nothing special just testing out the waters, well the second vid is sort of amusing.

The picture is clearly of higher res than the Wii game, can't they just lower the res and have it run a little smoother? I don't really know anything about emulators other than ZSNES and EPSXE, maybe Dolphin works differently.

This would be pretty cool if the frame rate didnt make it almost unbearable to watch.

@ryanwho: I've messed around with the emulator, lowering resolution doesn't help frame rate much at all.  Even the best performing games drop to unplayable frame rates on the highest end CPUs (overclocked dual cores are the best bet).

This just makes me wonder why Nintendo haven't made a level creator for Mario themselves. Unless they have I don't know, I'm not a huge fan.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Y'know hope of that is actually reason alone to buy this game.

I once bet someone 10 bucks (because I'm known to be HANDS DOWN the worst mario player ever, somehow) that i could get past that initial bullet volley on the first level of kaizo mario. Three hours later I took a screenshot of my glory, and I realized I worked waaaaaay too hard for the burrito I got with the money. But it was still worth it.

Goddamn I love nintendo hacking, it's so much fun. I gotta make sometin'.
