The first 2D Mario platformer for a home console in over 15 years. Though it has single-player, it focuses heavily on cooperative multiplayer, allowing up to 4 players to play simultaneously. This game also premiered Nintendo's Super Guide hint system.
Wasn't there another thread like this? Meh. I'd say no considering the reception MW2 has recieved. I however, plan on buying this first way before I buy MW2.
The Reggie bet was that NSMB Wii would outsell MW2 (360 version only) in the US between release and Jan, which ain't gonna happen. Long term and worldwide NSMB was a better chance.
Mario is a more long lasting game than Modern Warfare 2. Sure MW2 is going to be exceptionally popular now, but come 6 Months, maybe the tables will turn.

Continue the discussion in either one of those topics for now, I'll decide on if one of those needs locking or not later. Both do similar if but lightly different things. For the time being though this topic gets a lock as requested by the OP.
