N'Gai was born and mostly raised in Canada, except for the few years he spent in Guyana, South America. He attended Stanford University, where he wrote for the school newspaper and eventually earned his B.A. After graduating, Croal was a producer at Digital Ink, The Washington Post's first online service, from June 1994 to February 1995. He joined Newsweek in February of 1995 as an associate editor and was promoted to general editor in December of 1999. His "Level Up" blog was an industry must-read. His views on the early Resident Evil 5 trailer were rather controversial and prompted many discussions industry-wide.
He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and runs his own consulting company, Hit Detection. He was also briefly part of a podcast called Out of the Game with other former video game journalists.
