One of the best JRPGs in a long time

Great game, a nice fresh breathe of air in the glum looking JRPG world these days. Honestly the best JRPG of last generation bar none.

    • The story has somewhat of a typical JRPG structure to it (young boy needs to save the world with some super weapon!) but also has some really dark and very real to life themes to it in the background that I rather not spoil.
    • Characters and voice acting is great for the most part. Drippy will make up for any bad characters or voice acting though!
    • Gameplay is Pokemon style of capturing familiars. It isn't as in depth as Pokemon is, in fact the combat is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Never the less, its still fun. If you're looking for an in depth gameplay like Souls or what not, this is not it.
    • The world is AMAZING. Brad even said in the Quicklook that it was definitely in the running for best visuals in 2013. I think it had the best visuals personally, but being released in January it was overlooked.
    • Flaws are that the world does gets smaller as you go along, Ding Dong Dell seems so big at first. Never the less it still manages to stay unique. Errands become a little repetitive after a while, you do have some unique ones but other than that a lot are mostly the same thing.
    • The game took me about 50 or so hours to beat the main story, 110 hours to platinum.

JRPG fans appear to have gotten the short end of the stick this generation. With a plethora of classics being released on the SNES, Playstation, and Playstation 2 it was easy to get excited for what could be done on a new batch of consoles. Sadly, there have only been a mere handful of JRPGs that reached that high bar set in prior years. When long time developer Level-5 and famed Japanese animation team Studio Ghibli teamed up to create this title, they seemed poised to live up to those lofty ex...

Ni no Kuni is the most divisive game I've ever played. Many elements are done either well or good enough, while just about as many are done terribly. On one hand, Studio Ghibli contributed some of the best visual design I've ever seen in a game. The monsters, characters, and different settings all feel like they were ripped out of a animator's cell (do they use those anymore?). The Pokemon-like familiars system where you level different creatures to fight for you is really fun and addicting even...
