Poll Are you using English or Japanese Voices? (302 votes)

    Japanese 35%
    English 64%

How is everyone playing it? I'm doing Japanese myself. The lip sync in English was bothering me, and some of the banter didn't seem to translate too well. But the localization in this game seems great otherwise. I was impressed that they went so far as to remix bits of the soundtrack to use English voice samples instead of Japanese ones (like with the desert battle)

İ started today tried both as always i like jap version better i always rather original voice acting at games like tales , anime style games , jrpg etc. but this is kind of hack/slash like darksiders too much going on , its hard to follow subs so giving up some quality is better pick here i think.

English dub is decent enough as a sub fanboy im going dub at this game.

I would do Japanese but I don't want to keep looking at subtitles while I'm in the middle of a fight.

I'll probably play in English. I've seen that there's dialogue in the middle of combat. I only have one set of eyes. Besides, the subtitles are for the English audio, not for the Japanese audio, so there are sync issues and incorrect translations.

Eww, dubtitling. I hate when they do that.

Using Japanese on franchises such as this that I'm not familiar with. I tend to only use English on franchises I always have been with for a long time in which I'm used to the voices.

I always go with English in games or anime. I can't speak Japanese or understand it, so I wouldn't know if the voice acting is good or not with Japanese voice over. Plus, I dont' want to read captions the entire time.

I recently found out the English voice of 9S (Kyle McCarley), streamed a full playthough of Nier: Automata, with occasional appearances by the other voice actors like 2B and Eve, and it's kinda the best thing ever. Watching them geek out over the game they're in and voice the unvoiced dialogue in-character makes me appreciate the English voice cast even more. They're all a bunch of adorable nerds.

He's also currently streaming his way through OG Nier, which is also pretty great.

Oh that's neat. I wonder if a lot more voice actors will just start doing that. Shortly after FFXV came out the voice actors for the main crew got together to play a bunch of it and it was pretty great.

English is great. I feel the performances are nuanced enough that I'd prefer to actually understand what they're saying without subtitles. Some of these actors have done some very basic anime dub work so it's great to see them really put work in. Kyle McCarely kills it man. Julie Ann Taylor returning as Emil IS that character, as far as I'm concerned.

I think they do that in every game. I'd be surprised if a localization team actually provided two or more sets of subs.

I usually find Japanese voice acting to be over dramatic. Also as a former anime fan, I've noticed that Japan likes to fit their fictional characters into rigidly defined archetypes with certain defined modes of speaking. In that respect I find a good English vocal performance more "nuanced" and subtle.

@ezekiel: I'm sure they do, but it defeats the point of having Japanese audio for a non-speaker. That's probably why it's so rare to see dual-audio options in games in the first place.

I played with the English dub and thought it was really good.
