I have a 'New 3DSXL' and have some questions about the notification LED. That's the one on the top right of the hinge. It glows Green for Streetpass, Blue for Spotpass and Red for low battery. Is it supposed to light up while charging? Is it supposed to light up when the 3DS is on but closed? Also, I seem to remember it glowing solid red when on low battery, then blinking red when it's about to run out.

These come from a woeful experience with Nintendo support, having received my 3DS back for the second time and found it in worse condition than when I sent it. First time was to see if the cartridge slot was OK, and it came back with the back plate cracked around the screws. It has returned this time with that repaired but there are scratches on the screen that they reported while they had it, and I didn't notice before, as well as the LED not being as I expect it to but I want to get some answers before I call them again.

I don't have the willpower to keep chasing this up since it means packaging it up, sending it off to the repair centre and waiting over a week. Again. Last time they even tried to charge me £77 to replace the back plate that they broke. I don't really have any proof about whether the scratches were originally there or not but I can certainly see them now. Keep me strong, please.

Bummer. Sorry to hear about the bad customer experience. As far as the notification light goes, it doesn't light up when charging. It also only lights up during standby (when it's closed, but still on) if you received a Spotpass (blue) or a Streetpass (green). It only ever blinks red when you are dangerously low on battery, never a solid red. You may be thinking of the three lights on the very bottom right of the system: the left one will be blue and become solid red for low battery, the middle one is orange when charging, and the right one will be yellow when wireless connectivity is on.

As far as the scratches and whatnot go, if they don't mess with your gaming experience, I say don't worry about them.

@rjpelonia: thank you for such a great response. It's surprisingly hard to find basic stuff like that. The documentation on their site for older consoles included more detail and pictures, but the 3DS support has neither.

I use a DS Lite regularly as well as my 3DS so I get confused about what the lights mean since in the same position on the DS Lite there is a light that flashes green when on but closed, and goes solid red when on low power. It sounds like I was just confused, and that light is fine.

Regarding the scratches... it's hard to say. When the screen is dark they are noticeable. One is on the left side and goes all the way from the top to the bottom, and there is a smaller but deeper cut in the middle of the screen but not really noticeable unless it's dark. The thing is, they said they would repair it, but they didn't. I guess it would be more simple to not worry about it. I've played a little bit of Pokemon and wasn't distracted so I'll keep going. Thanks again.
