Alright, so lately I've been entertaining the thought of getting a cheap DS and just playing a bit of games in bed before sleep (I can only read so many court cases a night). I've never owned a handheld system in mah life.
So gimme some names. Only RPG's. Thats the kinda slow thing I would play right before sleep does its work. It all started with E3 when Nintendo announced they were making a sequel to one of the best RPGs to hit the gameboy or something. I forget what it was, but it might've had a word like 'sun' or 'dawn' or something.
Much thanks.

The Nintendo DS is a handheld featuring two screens, one of which is a resistive touchscreen. Four different models are available: the original DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, the DSi XL.

Golden Sun. That game was awesome.
Oh and also, Chrono Trigger is definitely worth a look. As are the many Final Fantasy games on the DS.
" Oh, and the reason I would get a DS is because they can still play all games back to the Gameboy generation right? "If you get a DS original or DS lite, they both have slots for GBA games. I'm not 100% sure but I think that's all that works in them. Can anyone confirm that gameboy color games and such work because for some reason I am thinking they don't.
Also, I just remembered if you're into Atlus games, (Persona and such) then you should try Devil Survivor. It's a little tough but I found it fun. Also there's The World Ends With You, which I guess could be considered an rpg. It may be too fast paced for what you're looking for though since you want to play before bed. The combat can get hectic, but it's fun.
" @Matthew said:Yeah, I'm fairly sure it's GBA only." Oh, and the reason I would get a DS is because they can still play all games back to the Gameboy generation right? Man, this reminds me of so many more games I need to add to my collection. I hope this helps in your research.
If you like the Final Fantasy series, FF5 for the GBA was pretty good. I'd never played it back in the day, since it wasn't released in the States. I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time now as well, and that game is amazing. Golden Sun + its sequel were very good, as was Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
@AgentJ: Great idea. Didn't cross my mind to do that.
@Jeffsekai: Typically, sound advice. But I'm coming on the halfway mark of college . . . a relationship is not really in the works for me right now.
" @oldschool: 2 things. It looks like there isn't really anything before 2005 on the list . . . is this just because they're titles that are off the top of your head? I know there must have been some great portable titles before then. And the Pokemon titles . . . is there actually a depth behind the typically child oriented games? The DS came out in 2005, and his list is onl of DS games. Don't worry about depth in Pokemon: There's plenty. However, you should maybe wait until the Gold/Silver remakes come out. The original Gold and Silver were the best of the bunch, and were by far the longest with the most depth.

"2005 is the release date of the DS and this is a DS list only, if you want, I can give you a list of decent RPG for the Gameboy. It pretty much covers every RPG game worth owning (although Zelda can be defined as an RPG, I think it is more an adventure/action).
Pokemon may be an aquired taste (as is Digimon). They aren't really "kiddy" games because they do have a lot of depth and can consume a large part of your life, if you give in to the addiction. If you have never played a Pokemon before, you may be surprised. Forget the story, it is fairly complicated for a little kid to play.
Just get back to me if you want me to compile a GBA RPG list for you. You may have some trouble tracking down copies of many of them.
" @oldschool: Yes, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, a small list of games that have come out, that would also be able to play on a DS (Phat can play the GBA format yes?), pre2005 would be all too kind. It doesn't have to be anywhere near as comprehensive as the previous list, but I do dig the FF, DQ rpg style. As Japanese as you can get'em. Please and thank you! "I'll get on it soon, just keep an eye over the next day. Oh, and yes, DS phat and lite both play GBA games. Avoid getting a phat though, apart from being an ugly beast, the light is really poor compared to the lite.
Okay, here we have the worthwhile GBA RPG. As you can see, with the DS and GBA, there is more than enough choice on RPG alone to keep you happy for the term of your natural life ^-^
All this makes me want to go back to some games and search e-bay for so many I missed.

" @oldschool: Hrm, I'd almost say you should switch the Golden Suns. I'd say the second one was the better of the two "No, the top list is just what I have. The bottom list is what I didn't get and should be considered - as well. I wish I had both Golden Sun games.

I must go on e-bay and see if I can track down some those original GBA RPG games at a reasonable price. I do regret not picking up Lost Age.
If your going RPG only id recommend Chrono Trigger (Im playing it for the first time just now and im loving it), Etrian Oddysey (an old school RPG with lots of random battles, hardly any story and you have to make your own map), Legacy of YS (its an oddball RPG where there are no "Battle Scenes" or even attack buttons, you just run into enemies), Pokemon (its Pokemon, even a non-player knows Pokemon lol) and Phantasy Star Collection (GBA game) which has Phantasy Star 1,2 and 3 (the saturn and PS2 version has 1,2,3 and 4) and they are jRPG's similer to early Final Fantasy's (say 2/3) set in a sci-fi world.
