I plan on buying a Switch in the next 2 and a half weeks now that I am properly employeed once more. I will definitely be picking up Zelda because I loved what little I played on PC, and probably Mario after all I've seen/heard about the game. I don't have much use for multiplayer games, local or online. What else would y'all recommend?
Nintendo Switch
Platform »
Nintendo's home console that can be turned into a portable device by removing it from its TV-dock. Launched worldwide on March 3, 2017.
Games to get?
Stardew Valley is dope on Switch. Mario & Rabbids is great if you want a decently challenging X-Com style strategy game.
@frostyryan: Celeste is a good call. Just picked it up for a plane ride and I couldn't stop playing for long portions of my ride. Very challenging, which I'm not usually super into, but it's well executed.
Others I've been enjoying:
- Bayonetta 2
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- Battle Chef Brigade
- Splatoon 2
- Dandara
- Sonic Mania
Celeste is a perfect game for switch and one of the best of the year so far
This man gets it right here. I'd say these are other games to get too:
- Sonic Mania
- Golf Story (if you like golfing games mixed in w/ RPG campaigns, also GS might be getting a physical release)
- Battle Chef Brigade
- Steamworld Dig 2
- Steamworld Heist
If you've got a masochistic streak or just really like Lovecraftian horror, Darkest Dungeon is a great time. It's a little wonky to control with the Joy-Cons, but the touch screen works very well.
Bayonetta 2 now that it's on Switch, probably need a proper controller for it
Mario Odyssey, great game.
I don't have a lot of games for the console yet as I feel it has yet to get real knockout titles, but I am looking out for the next Mario Tennis. Mario Kart 8 is also pretty good as I recall.
@inevpatoria: It's a really good game. Especially if you like challenging platformers.
I haven't played a lot of games on my Switch (curse you backlog), but I'd say Sonic Mania and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are great choices.
Mario Kart 8 is the best playing Mario Kart and has a surprisingly beefy single player. And multiplayer anywhere is a fantastic feature.
Sonic Mania is just an awesome platformer, and so replayable too! I've beaten the thing 4 times and I'm still playing to go back for more! Plus 2 new characters with their own abilities are being added this summer, so it's a great time to jump in with Plus when it comes out.
Honestly you could just stick with Mario and Zelda for a long time and prevent yourself from having a backlog of mediocre games to play. I've had a Switch since December and played Zelda for 130 hours and Mario for close to 50 and only thinking about picking up another game after 5 months of just those two.
- Sonic Mania
- Golf Story (if you like golfing games mixed in w/ RPG campaigns, also GS might be getting a physical release)
- Steamworld Dig 2
I came here to make sure all 3 of these were present.
Golf Story is a such a treat. The Quick Look GB did didn't do it any justice. So much goofy stuff happens in that game later on.
And yeah, Sonic Mania is amazing.
I'll add that the Switch version of Binding of Isaac is a very good way to play the game. I still play it a few hours a week.
Mario and Rabbids was surprisingly good. It gets a bit sloggy at the end but the extreme majority of it is a ton of fun.
I'm really digging the new/old Donkey Kong Country game so far.
I should probably buy Celeste I guess.
I've been playing Picross obsessively the last few weeks. It's great for handheld, and you can play in short bursts - if I've got 20 minutes to kill then there doesn't seem much point in opening up Odyssey or Breath Of The Wild.
Xenoblade 2 is also a great JRPG which, if you're into it, will give you 100+ hours of singleplayer content. Stardew Valley is also great, and they just added a multiplayer mode too.
I hate to be a a downer but I gotta disagree with both Xenoblade and Monster Hunter Generations. Both are very much YMMV games.
Definitely get BOTW and Odyssey. Even if you don't end up liking them, those are games everyone should at least try. Rabbids and Splatoon 2 are really good. The rest are ports that are worth playing if you didn't play them elsewhere.
Celeste is one of my fav games ever. It marries mechanics and story together in a way that ive not seen executed so well since Brothers. It also plays incredibly, well written, and the soundtrack is amaizng.
If Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate plays like 3 Ultimate (and it does from what I hear), I'd recommend that as well. That game is slowly sucking my life away and I'm loving it! It's basically the Skyrim I never had. And it's perfect for eating up long commutes if that's a thing for you. I boot it up and poof, I'm at work.
For me, Breath of the Wild is a must get. That game, to me, is amazing and reignited a love for video games that I didn't think was possible. Other than that I think both the Mario games (Rabbids and Oddyssey) are pretty fun, some older indie games I have enjoyed or started replaying are Binding of Isaac, Stardew Valley and Kingdom: Wild Lands. I have bought a lot more but either don't feel strongly about them or haven't really played them through yet.
I will warn you, if you are a scrub like me with a 32" TV and too lazy to play undocked, there are a couple of games that are basically unplayable because the text is simply too small to read. Oxenfree and Darkest Dungeon are the main ones I have discovered, and have pretty much stopped me from playing either of those games right now.
