    Noby Noby Boy

    Noby Noby Boy is the much awaited follow up to the Katamari Damacy series by eccentric artist and employee of Namco-Bandai, Keita Takahashi. Players control an unusual entity named BOY in surreal, randomly generated, physics-based sandbox worlds.

    Sony scored a nice little coup with Noby Noby Boy. While Namco Bandai has been busy turning out versions of Katamari Damacy on every platform you can think of--there's even a new one on the iPhone--the series' original creator, Keita Takahashi, has been working on his Next Big Thing to be released exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

    Of course, if Noby Noby is successful, I guess you can expect to see it follow a similar release pattern. But for the time being, if you want to play the game as soon as you can, you know where to go.

    Anyway, the release will come in "early 2009," according to a release the big NB just sent out, pictured at right. The following phrases contained therein have sort of piqued my interest about the game.

    • Eat objects to stretch to new lengths, or spit them out!
    • Record game footage and upload it to YouTube!
    • Start on Earth and explore the galaxy with the help of all the other BOYs playing online!

    I haven't seen much (well, any) of Noby Noby Boy so far, but vividly remembering the delightful weirdness of Katamari, that copy gives a fair impression of what this one might be like.

    UPDATE:Kotaku has a bit more info than this press release. Noby Noby will hit PSN in Japan on January 29 for 800 yen (roughly $9). In Europe, the price will be 4 euros, though no specific release date is given. Anybody want to give odds on a $9.99 price point in the U.S.?

    Er, 4 euros?  That is a very small price and as such I will expect a very small game (a sad conditioning on DLC) with a probable arseload of addon content.  Like Lumines on Xbox.

    We usually get the hard shaft in Europe on pricing so this is very suspect.

    Also I am intrigued as to the point of the game, because if Katamri was basically "collecting crap makes you happy" then this one must be something like "Becoming long makes you happy" which is ... I dunno but it sounds ace.

    1UP is running a week long preview of this as well, looks pretty interesting. I like the idea of GIRL growing through the solar system as an overall progress indicator of all the players in the real world collectively playing the game. They're saying it's expected it will take about two weeks for the Moon to be reached (at which point it's unlocked as a level set), and the rest of the solar system follows after that, likely many months away given the relatively much greater distances between each planet.

    I hope it is more than just becoming "long", like how katamari was just about getting big enough.  But it still seems to fit in with that amiguously gay style Katamari had.  There's something not right visually about some of those noby drawings, either that its phallic or like some kind of galactic rainbow tapeworm.

    I bet I'll love the game anyway since I was positively addicted to the Katamari series.

    If we get it for 4€, I'm guessing it will be 4/5$ in the US. I just can't live in a world where a game is cheaper in europe.
