Occultic;Nine is a multimedia work that initially began in 2014 as a series of light novels written by the producer of the Science Adventure series, Chiyomaru Shikura. Occultic;Nine is the first entry in a franchise internally referred to at 5pb as the Science Visual Novel series, which is unrelated to the Science Adventure franchise despite the games' titles all sharing the same use of semicolons. The story was later adapted into several other mediums including a manga starting in 2015 and a 12 episode anime produced by A-1 Pictures in 2016. Finally a visual novel adaptation of Occultic;Nine was created by 5pb and released in Japan for the PlayStation 4, Vita and Xbox One on November 9, 2017. However, shortly after the game's initial release Chiyomaru revealed that Occultic;Nine would be ported to a new platform, which was later revealed to be the Nintendo Switch, that will contain additional story content including a "true ending" that will also be made available on the previous versions of the game as a patch. The new ending is said to connect Occultic's story to the Science Adventure series, even though it is not considered to be a part of the franchise.
