Andrew Scott Reisse, one of the co-founders of Occulus VR and a mind behind the Occulus Rift, was killed earlier today when he was in a crosswalk and struck by a car during a police chase. That's just tragic.
Oculus Rift
The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset for the PC released in March 2016.
Occulus VR Co-founder killed.
Wow, that's a huge bummer. Condolences to his friends and family. It's a huge shame when the last people who deserve it fall victim to incidents like these.
Fuuuck. The guy didn't even get to see his company's work finished. My heart goes out to his family and friends and everyone at Occulus VR.
What a tragic destruction of life from beginning to end. I can only imagine him and all around him feeling nothing but a true passion and whole-hearted dedication to their work and to have this happen is just awful. For his family and all those affected my heart goes out.
For those unwilling to read the news story, a group of suspects involved in an already fatal shooting with police began a chase. During that chase they slammed into two cars and ran a number of red lights, thereby fatally striking Andrew Reisse with their Dodge Charger.
That fucking sucks. Didn't the Virtual Boy guy die in a car crash too? Or am I confused.
Yes, but while tragic, the circumstances were different. Gunpei Yokoi and another man were riding in a car together when they pulled over to the side of the road to inspect a car accident, but Yokoi was standing in the path of traffic and was hit by a passing vehicle.

OMG! Not like that! That's truly the worst. The creator of my favorite franchise ever (Metroid) died in a situation he could have avoided.
Things like these just shouldn't happen.
BAN THE ASSAULT CARS!
Source please!
There's a link in the OP.
Absolutely devastating, and senseless. The fellow was just out for a walk...
My heart and sympathies go out to his family and co-workers - truly a substantial and painful loss.
: ( Well.. John Carmack doesn't seem to have said anything yet on Twitter.. But I'm sure he will at some point.
R.I.P.
Good to see the US prison system does what it's supposed to.
Sad news.
what does that even mean?
I'm not sure it actually means anything. Probably best to ignore it.
But if cars are outlawed... only outlaws will have cars.
...anyway, this dude was doing some creative ass shit that's probably changing the fucking future as we speak, it's a shame to see him cut down.

And then you buy in to all of the conspiracies surrounding his death and it gets even crazier.
The suspects were taken into custody. Police say all are gang members on probation, with outstanding warrants for their arrest.
Well, that is frustrating.
The Oculus seems like it could be very interesting. So much better if he could have seen it realized. Best wishes to his friends and family.
Poor guy. I hope that his family gets to see some of the profits from the sales of the Rift. But I could easily see them not getting anything because, legally, I don't think they have any claim to those profits unless this co-founder had some official writing stating where his pay from the sales would go if or when he died. But he was young so he probably wouldn't have thought to do that. I wouldn't have in his place.
That's really unfortunate, especially since he won't be able to see his amazing and innovative project fully realized. Besides that, my thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones.
How unbelievably tragic. The Oculus Rift really does seem like an important device , hopefully his family can find some peace in his work on such an incredible innovation which will continue to evolve. Thoughts go out to his friends and family, I hope justice is served on the cowards responsible.
How about the police department that participated in the chase in a dense urban environment be held accountable in his death?!?! Cops want any excuse to live in an action movie. They don't care about endangering innocent people, they want to pretend to be a super hero. Such pathetic people. Whoever this guy was, they could have tracked him down through CCTV, vehicle registration, or eye witnesses, they didn't need to chase through surface streets.

I think he would like his legacy to be attached to the gameboy instead, but yes.
A bloody sad tragedy, was it also a police officer that was fatally wounded with one of the criminals or the other way around? Either way R.I.P. Andrew Scott Reisse and I hope justice is served from all of this.
@arbitrarywater: Wait what!? Elaborate plz!

How do you propose catching the guy who was speeding down said city streets without, you know...chasing him?
EDIT: Oh and...if you'd read the article...the criminals were the ones running red lights and they hit him. Not the cops.
Damn, this is sad news.

That is terrible. RIP Andrew Scott Reisse. I have been fascinated with the Oculus Rift since I heard it existed and will be buying one, this is one page I never expected in the development process. Just so sad.

I'm no police officer but I imagine it's not that simple, especially if they really were gang members.
@mariachimacabre: It's actually not that uncommon for police to call off dangerous chases because they are going too fast or could potentially enter high-density areas and put pedestrians at risk. It's partly why so many police chase videos happen on wide highways or country roads rather than city streets. Though I'm not trying to say they're at fault in this case, because we don't really have any way of knowing the specifics.
In any event, this is terrible news and a real tragedy. He was obviously brilliant and my condolences go out to his family and the Occulus team.
@cold_wolven: article seems to suggest an officer was injured, if so that just sucks also...
That's awful. Another brilliant mind gone.

The underlined line suggests the impossible. CCTV footage can take hours to obtain; vehicle registration tells you who owns it, which is nearly useless information; and eye witnesses are incredibly unreliable. If you want to blame someone, try blaming the convicted gang member who broke probation and slammed into the innocent man.
