Ability to play as a non-human or extraterrestrial character.
Bats are small, very social flying mammals. They may frequent caves or haunted houses.
Some game characters just cannot swim. This usually means automatic death as soon as they hit the water.

Even in settings with many different races, sometimes a specific character will be of a race no one else in the setting recognizes. While usually it is a plot point, occasionally it is a running joke that nobody knows what species they belong to. Usually the characters are very unique.
You're halfway through the game or more, everything's going great. You've got tons of weapons and crap and BAM! Flash grenade! You wake up later captured, off to either be executed, interrogated, etc. Often, you've lost all of your weapons as well. You sir, have just woken up captured.
No longer just a pastime for bored individuals, the simple act of whistling has played an integral part in games such as the Splinter Cell series.
