    Onslaught Review by KingreX32

Onslaught is a wiiware title released for download on February 23 2009. It was developed by Shade and published by Hudson Soft.

Onslaught is an action FPS, the game follows a member of a military team sent to investigate a research colony on a distant planet after contact with the colony is lost. When the team arrives on the planet they are attacked by cyborg insects. Once they are “dealt with” you embark on your mission, find out what happened to the research colony.

The name Onslaught is very fitting for this game as in almost every level you have to face an ‘onslaught” of insects. Insects range from caterpillars, to grasshoppers and beetles, at any given time there are at least 30 to 50 insects on screen at one time. Like zombies insects can be destroyed easily, but there strength is in numbers, to help you diminish those numbers, you get all sorts of powerful weapons. As you play through the story mode you unlock weapons, you can carry four weapons at a time so when you unlock them all choose carefully which ones you want to use. Weapons range from futuristic shot guns, machine guns, miniguns, rocket launchers, and in some levels the BDK-9, (The BKD-G9 is a hover craft that has two MASSIVE miniguns on it) there are also explosives and electric whips. Even though you are armed to the point of being a small army insects will and can still swarm on you, that’s where your AI comes in. When you’re fighting off waves of robotic insects you are not alone, you can’t see them but you always have two other AI soldiers keeping you company. The great thing about your AI partners is the fact that unlike the AI in some other games these guys don’t just stand there and fire there guns without hitting anything, they actually do things like watch your back and lay down cover fire for you. Another great thing about the AI is the fact that you can give them simple commands, commands like forward formation (the AI attacks enemies in front of you) side formation ( the AI attacks enemies coming in from the sides) and rear formation (the AI attacks enemies’ from behind). Apart from the bugs one of the other challenges you will face is dealing with bug blood. It will happen learn to deal with it, during the game  bug blood will get on you for either two reasons, they spit it out on you or your shooting them at them very closely. According to the game bug blood is very acidic and if it gets on you, you need to get it off fast or you will die. Another thing you have to deal with is bosses. Yes there are boss battles in the game; the good thing is that unlike ALL OTHER GAMES theses one isn’t at the end of every level. Boss fight usually occur every couple of levels, there a pain but you have to deal with it. Like Resident Evil the Umbrella Chronicles, House of the Dead Overkill and Ghost Squad at the end of every level you get a score based off of your performance, unlike the other games I mentioned your score/points can’t be used to purchase everything.

On top of the story mode Onslaught also has on online mode, three to be specific. The three different modes online are Free battle(where you friends, people from your region or the world play in missions from the story mode) Free Ranking Battle (where you friends, people from your region or the world take part in a massive battle, after a certain amount of time the game ends and your score is placed online for all to see) and Ranking List (here is where you go to see how you rank in the world based off of scores from the story mode and online).

In terms of graphics, these were actually very good, they weren’t the greatest but they were very far from the worst. Though it’s the little things that make this game very good graphics wise, little things like the environment around you lighting up when you shoot your gun, or the streak effects when you wipe off bug blood, very well done these graphics were. Game play wise the game was a shoot em up, in some levels you get the BKD-G9 then it becomes an even bigger shoot em up. Not that I’m complaining, the game might have been just a shoot em up but it’s a challenging shoot em up. Some missions require you to protect things like ships, supplies’ and bases and although you have your AI to help you out bugs still find away to get around you, then its game other if whatever you’re protecting is destroyed. Don’t be fooled people onslaught is a tough game.

Overall Onslaught was an awesome game, everything was great about it the controls, the weapons, your AI partners and the many options and features. On the negative side the story of Onslaught was very stereotypically Sci-fi, cheesy earth defenders like. Some of the levels were huge and it was easy to get lost, not to mention some of the objectives near impossible to complete. Onslaught is an awesome awesome game, it had a lot more than I was expecting for a wiiware title, and for 1000 wii points its so worth the buy. Onslaught gets a 9.6 out of 10.
