    Outcast

Game » consists of 4 releases. Released Jul 31, 1999

Critically lauded but commercially unsuccessful in the United States, Belgian developer Appeal's swan song was ahead of its time and has gained a cult following. Shoot, scan, and smash pots on a variety of alien landscapes.

Really missing Outcast - where`s the competition??

(For those poor, wretched souls who haven`t played this master piece: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcast_(game) )

I am trying to avoid as best as I can the sweet, sweet nostalgia... but I am really missing Outcast. I mean REALLY. I still think that it is by far the best game I have ever played. And it`s been 9 (!) years since it was published. At that time I had a really low-tech computer and I had to play the voxel-graphic -based game on the lowest of the settings. I was pissed. But even thought it looked grainy I haven`t since that been so immersed in a game-world or in a story in a game. The Moscow-philharmonics music. The great saving system. The odd world. The orange shirt. The name "Cutter Slade". Beasts of burden. Sunny, lush world. So many imaginative things.

Anyone feeling me? Got any game suggestions to help my Outcast-addiction?? Any reason there isn`t more games like that anymore???

@Helo: I only played a little bit of it, but I've always wanted to play more. It was really immersive and I'm sure the NPC interaction would have been compelling. Oh, well. Maybe one day I'll put together a retro system to play that and Thief again.

It remains a better open-world game than much more famous titles. The gameplay, story and world mesh perfectly and the way its NPCs react to you and their environment is only now beginning to be approached by current games.

It seamlessly combines action, adventure, light stealth and borrows its quest structure from RPGs (but without the leveling and statistics). Graphically it's obviously outdated though its unique art-direction and visual flair has made it age a lot better than most. The atmosphere is amazing. If you're a fan of games like Little Big Adventure, Beyond Good & Evil, or Gothic you owe it to yourself to play this.

This game deserves a re-release on Steam or GOG.

Helo: If you're looking for a similar experience I think RPGs are your best bet. Most open world 'adventures' today are content to throw you some emergent mechanics and then stick a story on in cutscenes. As far as specific suggestions, Gothic as mentioned above, and I think Deus Ex and Vampire Bloodlines also share certain elements with this game in how they manage to bring a world to life...

I wonder if you could replace the music files and burn a new CD, there were mp3s of the soundtrack floating around somewhere.

This thread dredged the deepest darkest depths of my mind and found vivid memories of hours playing this demo as a kid.  I remember jumping through portals and then getting shot by weird alien dudes.  It was pretty cool.

There is a project to remake it with the Cryengine  http://www.openoutcast.org/wp/  I missed out on the original but remember being interested at the time, especially with the voxel technology .

Edit: I really should look at when threads were originally  posted more carefully. Clicked through from the front page.

I meant in terms of OUTKAST, the duo to which he was referring.  Also, it was in jest.  Oh and do go fuck yourself, but nicely.

Outcast was a fantastic game. I BELIEVE it's slated for re-release sometime this year on GOG.com (Good Old Games).

Dammit...Now I really wanna play Outcast.

Which is why you shouldn't assume someone else's tone yourself.

Or you could just refrain from being a smart ass. OR if that's too difficult (i love being a smart ass so I can relate if it is), you can not get defensive when somebody DOES assume you are serious when correcting somebody's grammar on the internet. It's not like that doesn't happen every 4 seconds or anything. Perhaps if there weren't a legion of grammar Nazis roaming the internet, waiting to pounce every chance they get it would be a different story.
