I just bought 50 loot boxes. What is wrong with me?

I normally do not buy blind boxes of any type let alone 50 of them but I've been on an Overwatch kick lately and must have just had a lapse in judgement. Also I got hot garbage or duplicates from more than half of them. 3 duplicate legandary's in fact. I just contributed to the problem. I'm level 65 in case anyone was wondering and I didn't have a lot of skins to begin with so 3 legendary dupes is kind of crazy.

How many boxes have you bought? Was it worth it to you?

@holycrapitsadam: Wow, that's a lot of boxes. As someone who doesn't understand why anyone would buy loot boxes in Overwatch, would you mind giving me a bit of insight on this one? Normally I can look at something like this and understand why someone would do it even if I would not. But I don't get it when it comes to cosmetics in fully priced games.

@arabes: Honestly your guess is as good as mine. There are a couple of skins that I really wanted to just trying to maximize my chances of getting those skins was the driving factor behind the purchase.

I didn't even end up getting those skins but I did have enough in game currency from all the duplicates to buy them so it worked out in the end I guess.

Now I will just be playing for fun and not caring what comes out of future loot boxes cause I have most of the skins I want for the characters I play.

If duplicates were not a thing (which they shouldn't be), I would probably be enticed to buy more but since they are a factor and given my recent experience, I can say with some confidence I won't buy another loot box again

I don't mean to a kick a man while he's down but you should have at least waited for the next event if this is what you were planning to do duder.

I've been really tempted at times to buy boxes, but to be honest each event there's only so many cosmetics I actually want, and I have a nice amount of Overwatch gold saved up for last day buys if I don't get what I want via normal box drops.

Hats are cool! If you have the money and you get some joy from it, don't feel too bad about it. That said the Overwatch lootboxes are kinda shitty with their duplicates.

Cosmetics to me are basically like physical collectibles, but they don't take up space.

Ahhh loot boxes. They get everyone at least once. Sucks to be a species with such a vulnerability in our minds but god damn it it feels good to open boxes.

Well, it's the push from these VS the pull from Blizzard for designing their in-game character customisation system around purchasable blind-boxes. I've said it many times before that the lootbox system is pretty insidious. It's designed around people being frustrated and spending money, so I think it needs to be recognised that Blizzard have a hand in this as well. Which is a shame because I've started playing again in the last week and it's still incredibly fun.

I once saw someone describe 'rage purchasing' extra lootboxes. I don't think that's a feeling any game should give someone.

    Your money.

It's no different really than buying the $120 version of a game rather than the $60 version. If you enjoy it, want to get the extra content and want to support the dev team/publisher, go for it.

$40 isn't that bad. Make sure you don't give in to buying more right now just because you broke the seal. If anything I'd wait for the next event so you can get more exclusives and less duplicates. Work smarter with the loot boxes, not harder.

I feel like Overwatch was barely worth the $40 I begrudgingly gave them, so the idea of ever paying real money for the loot boxes is completely absurd to me. There are so many other F2P game Michael Transactions I would flush money down the toilet on before I would ever consider buying Overwatch loot boxes.

Help pay for those servers: everybody wins (except you, maybe - depends how you feel about it)!

My "blind-pack buying" tingles are satiated through card games (and by satiated I mean a joyous money-sink), none left over for video games.

While I wouldn't do it for Overwatch (which I really like, but I almost exclusively use Tjorborn so it's not worth it), if Borderlands 3 had a ton of customization options and skins, I'd almost certainly buy into bullshit like this because I'm weak.

Yeah, I've been spending an absurd amount of money on Paragon skins, emotes, and loot crates. The justification is that I play the game so much that I'm rarely buying other titles, but that still doesn't make paying $15 for a skin ok--even if it does turn my space mage into a skeleton pirate with a captain's wheel hoola hoop. Ok, maybe it was a little worth it.

@holycrapitsadam: Overwatch gacha man. Don't feel bad, it's meant to be addictive to certain people. That's why gachapon loot box systems that OW uses are regulated in Japan (at least attempted to be).

All you can do is either try to go cold turkey or uninstall when you've got the fever.

I've bought zero boxes fwiw. I know if I allowed myself to buy one, I'd end up being a whale.

I think the random nature of Loot Boxes is a deterrent for me. If I could spend $10-20 and get the exact JunkRat skin I want I’d probably have done that for a few characters by now.

@seanfoster: For that amount of money, you'd likely get 1000 currency, or close to it, along with whatever else you get from the boxes you open

I don't really buy boxes but if i did, i'd only do it during a rare event like the Summer Games event where getting that skin is going to be pretty rare.

I've played over 200 hours of Overwatch and haven't bought a single box. I see no need to. Whenever there is a skin or voice line etc I really like I just buy it with the in game currency. I would love Blizzard to give me an honest to God reason to give them more money I really would because I've had so much enjoyment out of that game, but I just can't do it for loot boxes.

I recently proclaimed, in no weak fashion, my disgust for this sort of thing in another thread but yeah I did that, and then some, during the olympic games promo (when you couldn't buy the skins for ingame currency)... Got caught up in the Overwatch zeitgeist I guess...

And no, I didn't get the skin I wanted (D.VA), was pretty salty for a while. Serves me right.

I've purchased a total of 100 boxes across the two events. I essentially got every skin that I wanted plus enough currency to buy what I didn't get.

Was it a wise use of money? No. But was I happy I got every Widowmaker skin and the Halloween Mercy? Yeah.

I have bought a shitload of TF2 crates over the years so I definitely get the appeal, but something about the skins in Overwatch just doesn't grab me in the same way. I pretty much find a skin I like and keep it equipped forever.

The frequency at which you get loot boxes and the lack of customisation options just means I kind of don't care to pay for that stuff. Especially when I have 1000s of credits and can buy anything I really wanted anyway.

After nearly a year of Diamond Dynasty and NBA MyTeam addiction without spending loot boxes, I got so fed up with the lack of progression in the MyTeam format that I caved during the All-Star Weekend VC sales and bought....$200 fucking dollars worth of in-game money to buy card packs.

My team is much more fun to play with now but when I think about MLB being right around the corner with it's absolutely more fair card system (primarily some kind of reward for every game you play rather than enough money to buy a pack every five to six games) and my recent deep discount purchases of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Titanfall 2, Inside, a renewed interest in Witcher 3 (been working through the complete edition slowly since launch two years ago!) and my recent purchase of Horizon...

I feel like I need to keep playing NBA to justify the purchase, when this would usually be the time of year I start dropping away from it in favor of backlog games and taking a competitive gaming breather before MLB. Damn those infernal loot boxes!

I almost bought some boxes on the last day of the Lunar New Year event because I still wanted those sweet Hog and Zen Journey to the West skins, but I talked myself down from that cliff. I just reminded myself that rather than paying $15 for cosmetics that I can't even see myself while playing the game, I could instead buy any of the full, amazing $15 games on steam.

@holycrapitsadam: wow, that's a lot of money to shell out and you may have just completely cut down the carrot on the end of the stick for leveling up. That was at least how i viewed loot boxes at first. Now i just play because it's damn fun. Loot boxes are window dressing.

In most games I stay far away from the cosmetic stuff but I love Overwatch and some of the skins they've made, so I tend to drop $20 when they have events. Blind boxes are an annoying business strategy but spending 20 bucks every few months on a game I play damn near every day feels fine for me. I will say the round I bought for lunar new year was traaaaasshhhhh and that was pretty annoying but I had enough to buy the Reihnhardt skin so I got what I needed.

It's a value decision for yourself. I'd be a lot less likely to spend if they weren't supporting the game so much but with the free characters, maps, and events with the modes I I haven't lost interest at all since it came out and I don't mind spending a little to turn my Junkrat into a scarecrow looking dude with a plaid gun.
