Played Europa Universalis III to death.  Tried Heroes of Might and Magic V, seemed pretty shallow.  Done the Civ thing.

Any games I need to try?

It's kind of old, but I remember Heroes of Might and Magic 3 being really good. I never tried Heroes of Might and Magic V, so I can't compare the two.

I thought HOMM3 was really good too, I only tried the HOMM5 demo, owned HOMM4 too, thought 3 was best.  Not a huge fan of Gal Civ myself, but it's a decent series.

Not wanting to turn you away from PC, but do you have any other platforms?  A Gameboy Advance or Nintendo DS?  Xbox 360?  I feel like in recent years consoles and handhelds have gotten most of the breakthrough TBS titles.  Advance Wars is a long running series on Nintendo platforms.  Culdcept series on 360 and DS (and older platforms) is great IMO.

Disgaea series, Final Fantasy Tactics series, Fire Emblem series, and Metal Gear Acid series.

I would say while turn based they require a far different taste than the games he said he enjoyed. He may like them, he may not. Either way, they don't replace PC turn based goodness, they're a very different kind of goodness imo. Advance Wars is perhaps the more similar style.

Forgot to say, try out Silent Storm. Action point based etc.

Jagged Alliance is supposed to be great.

So is the X-COM series. Especially Enemy Unknown, apparently.

Fallout's combat system is unpolished, but it's a great roleplaying game, but Tactics is supposed to add a great combat system at the cost of story and whatnot.

Yea there's some great older ones.

Jagged Alliance 2 is amazing.  X-Com series is great, but I've played less.

I didn't like Silent Storm so much.  A lot of people like Freedom Force but I didn't like those so much either.  If I remember right Freedom Force was a lot like Silent Storm.

There's also absolutely crazy stuff in a genre they used to call 'wargames'.  Korsun Pocket is a good example.

You might want to look into the WH40K games(not Dawn of War, the tabletop simulations). Those are supposed to be good.

Sins of a Solar Empire is good... not exactly turn-based, but you should still look into it...

Rome: Total War, hands down the best in the Total War series.

Also, good times to be had with HOMM3 hot seat :P
