Poll Does your PC have an optical drive? (601 votes)

    Yes 63%
    No 37%

I bought a case without optical bays so I don't have one. Recently I wanted to rip some of my old DVDs (mostly TV shows that aren't available in HD) so I bought a generic dirt cheap USB drive from Ebay. Works surprisingly well!

Nope, I haven't got a DVD since someone got me Family Guy season 3 about a decade ago. Never needed a drive although I still have a stack of blank DVDs somewhere.

Slightly off topic but I find Dan rebuying all his DVDs on Blueray as utterly insane.

I do the same thing with my favourites because until streaming movies come with extras (when I rip DVDs to my NAS I include commentary tracks) it's still the most complete way for a film fan.

Can't remember the last time I watched a movie on my PC though and I've re-bought most of the old disc based games I own on Steam or GOG.

Still got one for my old games. Too lazy to rip them. My previous build of like 5-7 years ago still had a floppy drive because why not?

Yes, a Bluray reader. I haven't meaningfully used it since Fallout 4 came out, and the physical edition of that game was just a 9GB partial preload on a single DVD. At least Dragon Age Inquisition gave me four discs and meaningfully reduced my download time. I still watch tons of movies and shows physically, but I use my PS3 or Xbox One for that. Internet is still not great or cheap out here, and multiple ongoing streaming subscriptions add up quick.

@dave_tacitus: Is it because the extras are new or more abundant or is everything else exactly the same? Isn't Dan also replacing his entire collection. It just seems like such a waste of resources.

I built my PC in 2012 and I put a DVD drive in. Couldn't see a reason to spend the extra for a Blu-Ray drive, especially as I had a PS3 at the time, but I did use the disc a few times for things like Civilization V and StarCraft II (although those both then just downloaded from Steam/Battlenet) as well as for installing older games I already had on disc. I guess I also picked up Manga Studio 5 recently and that came on a disc, so it does still see some use - perhaps once a year or so.

@picky_bugger: I'm a sucker for a good commentary track, I suppose, but guess I'm in the minority - Apparently Netflix included one with the first House of Cards season but the take-up was so low that they didn't bother with subsequent seasons.

It'd be an easy enough thing to implement, especially if a movie has one for the disc release, but doubt it's worth their time.

I figured that it would be nice to at least have the option of using discs. And it was only 20$, so why not.

Yes, I still run into quite a few situations where I've needed one and don't want to be caught without it, especially since they are not expensive.

I have an old DVD burner. Still use it every now and then to play old games but I don't really need it. My next build will not have any optical drives, or any traditional hard drives for that matter. #SSDMasterrace

Yes, and I'm thinking about building a computer over the next month or so that will also have one. They're pretty cheap and I'm looking to rip my DVDs and Blu-Rays at some point in the future.

I got a blu-ray burner off Amazon for like $40 because I figured it might be useful to have. I ripped some of my CD collection with it.

The one I installed broke like immediately after I built the PC and I should really replace it what with how cheap Amazon makes PC games on disc and how bad my internet is.

Nope. I have one in my closet I got with a couple of oldish PC games that aren't old enough for GOG or no longer available digitally (thanks GFWL) and thats all I've used it for. Actually probably need to pull it out again because I reinstalled Windows and had foolishly installed some of those games on my C Drive.

Surprised at the poll results, I figured everyone would get away from that stuff. Discs aren't great for archiving, and on PC these days so little is even available actually on a disc so you don't save much. I figured people would have already digitized their old media and moved away.

I still have an optical drive in my main production rig and in my media server/htpc/mame machine, my laptop doesn't have one and its never been an issue.

Only port/interface that I can't live without on my laptop is wired ethernet thanks to the incredible dodgy wifi in my office.

Haven't had one since 2010. It's been an issue maybe twice in that time, but I can easily go rip/burn discs on another computer so it's kind of whatever.

Some younger students laughed at me recently for having a laptop with an optical drive.

My desktop still has one although I'm not sure what good it's doing. I bought a physical copy of DOOM this year because the sale price made it cheaper than the digital version at the time and internet here is not the fastest so I hoped for a quicker installation. Turns out I still had to download 40+ GB of patches which took many hours.

Office gaming PC? No and I'm glad I skipped out on it.

About to build a small HTPC gaming build for the bedroom and I plan to skip on a ODD there too.

For now, but it's probably not going to be in there much longer. If I get a smaller case down the line that thing's the first thing to go. If I need an optical drive for some reason I'll just get a USB one.

    Yes*.

    * It's in the optical drive slot of my desktop's case, but it isn't actually hooked up. I only hook it up to do OS installs. It hasn't been used for probably 2 years at least.

My laptop does not have an optical drive.

Yeah, got a BD burner in my desktop, strictly for the purpose of backing up optical media to my NAS and playing old games that aren't on gog. Black Dahlia, for instance.

Out of my 6 laptops I think one from 2010 has a dvd burner in it, but I also have a usb dvd reader in case I ever need to install software off optical media again. Actually had to use it recently to install some architectural CAD software.

It shouldn't, but it does. I told the guy who put it together that I didn't want one. He threw one in for free anyway. Since then, I've replaced every single other part in my PC, and kept the drive. It's like this old stray dog that just keeps hanging around.

I spend like $20 or $30 bucks for a Blu Ray burner several years ago and I think I've used it less than a dozen times in total. I don't even need it to install windows because bootable USB drives. That kind of physical media is getting left behind, at least on PC in my opinion. The digital future is gaining more and more traction by the day.
