Can anyone tell me what would be the next card up from a GTX 275 that would show a significant performance increase?

More specifically, what card (not the upmost high end card) would be the next logical step up performance wise?

How much of a performance increase are you hoping to get?

    @sodiumCyclops:
Well, you said not the upmost high end card, but the logical increase would be a DX11 card.  I know that the GeForce GTX 400 series is DX11, I don' t know if the 300 series is DX 11.  So, nVidia wise, one of those is a good general area to look into.

from what i read, 2x gtx 275 in SLI is almost equivalent in performance(or slightly better) to a single gtx 470.   Dunno if that is a good comparison for what you are looking for.

You should also make sure your power supply can handle the new card

@Marz: That's more like it. Do keep in mind that I'm more looking for a performance increase so DX11 is not really a factor.

Plus to add to that, I only have 1 PCI-E x16 slot so SLi is out of the question.

I'm basically looking for the first card that will provide a significant boost from the 275. The GTX 460 looks nice, but is not much faster at all from a 275.

The 300's aren't a full-on series.  They're just renamed versions of older cards mostly, same as the 100's.  They effectively don't matter.

TC, the first nVidia card that will provide a meaningful performance boost up from the 275 is the 470.  Won't be a huge gain or anything, mind you.  You're not going to find any single-GPU video card run by itself that's a huge step up from a 275 yet.

The 400's run very hot, though.  You'll want to have some pretty decent cooling if you get one.

@JP_Russell: thanks for the tips! The 470 does sound enticing and I will be running a full custom water setup so cooling isn't an issue.

Well gtx460 1gb is slightly more powerful than your card so that's too low. However a gtx470 and hd5850 isn't what I call a big enough boost. Maybe the hd5870 is what your looking for considering the gtx480 cost way too much for it's lack of value and heat problems. Then again you won't get physX, however the card is like $430, maybe you can get one with a mail in rebate around $400 if you can find it.

@HitmanAgent47: According to NZD (New Zealand dollars, where I live) I can get the 480 for about $800-900 and the 5870 for $550-$650.

@sodiumCyclops: damn, that's expensive, I suppose you don't have an sli mobo. I guess a gtx480 is out of the question. However if you want a step up, the hd5850 or gtx470 will only give you like 15-20 more frames on average, not like way more with the gtx480. I say the hd5870 is the next big step up, however what your paying is expensive.

How much did you spend on your gtx275? Maybe just get another one and sli it, or buy a sli mobo instead and sli that card.

I too am using a GTX 275 for the moment, soon planning to upgrade to a GTX 480 myself, for you either the 470 or the 5850 would be a decent enough increase. If you are looking for a little more oomph you could go for the 5870 (I believe it presents a better value than the 480 I'm just silly and want my damn 480).  Here in Canada you can get a 5870 for less than $100 more than a 5850, if it is comparable in New Zealand I would go for the 5870.

If you do get an Nvidia card I recommend EVGA. It's mainly a personal preference but I've never had a bad experience with them.

    here is another question...

Which card would be better for things like 3D rendering with 3Ds Max and After Effects? It's something I do a lot of these days besides gaming so that too, really does factor in.

    So... 470 or 5850?

I have the GTX 275 also, and people seem to recommend two 460 cards in SLI. According to tests they pretty much destroy everything else for the price!
